Title: SA artists worth mentioning
Post by: DRNB on March 25, 2015, 09:10:30 AM
I've read through the Dan Patlansky thread, and not wanting to Hijack that thread I decided to start this one.

Glad to hear the mention of Albert Frost , another phenomenal SA player .

Dan Patlansky is certainly recon as one of SA's best. Seeing Albert Frost's name mentioned in the same thread, I thought another name that certainly is worth mentioning is Nathan Smith.

I've seen Nathan and Albert are both the first time as part of the "Riders from the Storm" show. and he is probably the best guitarist I've seen live.

Here Nathan is performing a Gary Moore song in the Gary Moore tribute show. A must see if you're a Gary Moore fan.

Another one of my favorites, also from the "Riders From the Storm" show is Robin Auld. Robin is probably my favorite vocalist in SA, with Nathan taking the lead as guitarist.

Two that I enjoy alot and posted on elsewhere - Dan Patlansky and Roan van As.

Biggest issue is to get their music.

Hi

Great music/blues revival happening in and around Cape Town. Here are some bands/artists really worth keeping an eye out for:

* Crimson House - I have never seen a band riper to make a breakthrough into the big time - one of my favourites
* Mr. Cat & The Jackal - Truly interesting and unique sound
* Basson Loubser - Could easily give Mr. Patlatsky a run for his money in my opinion - and I say this with utmost respect for Dan's skills
* Boulevard Blues - Really solid blues outfit, usually featuring some interesting guest artists
* Carla Louw - I really rate this spunky little vocalist highly and she covers everything from Jazz to pop, to blues
* Ann Jangle - Another local destined for great things internationally, in my opinion

Catching any of these live is highly recommended!

Regards

^^ Have to agree with the above, haven't seen Crimson House or Carla Louw, though, hope to, soon!
Off course, the BBB is legendary already!

My favourite jazz outfit has to be the fantastic Kyle Shepherd Trio, these guys just ooze musicality...

And the other eve at Die Boer in Durbanville,I saw a magic new Trio - 'Hatchetman'. Mostly penning their own stuff, the synergy between these guys is jaw-dropping,in true CSNY vein, they WILL enthrall anyone who loves good music and lyrics! Good luck to them at the GAF starting this week, they perform at the Graham.  :groovy:

Something a bit more modern from a group called ISO:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QcsdRwpuQk

I think their music, especially that song in the link above, is very very catchy.  Its a pity that local groups don't get too much of radio time - I only heard this group 'cos a friend of mine knows the drummer and I decided to listen to some of their stuff.

Thanks for the list! I'm struggling a bit to get good material from Carla Louw. Basson Laubscher sounds good, but I'm really enjoying the Boulevard Blues Band. Looks like they're CT based. More the pity - I'd love to be able to get a way for an evening of blues up in Jhb.

Guys, I also think a mention should go out to the VoŽlvry gang: Johannes Kerkorrel, Bernoldus Niemand, Daggadirk Uys and Koos Kombuis.

They were the first artists to take on and insult PW and his thugs in Afrikaans.

It is worthwhile to listen to their protest album "VoŽlvry", the tour that went to university campuses in the '80-ies, but shortly got banned from all university campus. Mike de Vries was the topdag at stellenbosch back then, and some graffitti on a wll on campus said "Wie het Kerkorrel se Mike geVries?"

After they got banned, the Stellenbosch concert was held at Drie Geuwels, and the State Security Police was there with cameras and ready to arrest the whole bunch, but by that time TV stations from the Netherlands came over to film this protest concert and the Security Police at least had the wisdom to do nothing.

Two worthwhile albums to listen to, is the album "VoŽlvry" from the tour and also "Eet Kreef" by Johanneskerkorrel en die gereformeerde Blues Band, keeping in mind the era and the situation in South Africa back then.

Following this, Koos Kombuis has a recent album, Bloedrivier, with a song in memory of Taliep Peitersen, and just about every South Afrikan artist (all the Afrikaans guys anyway) joined to sing on this recording, Anton Goosen even put aside his long running tiff with Koos to join. I think the song is called Reconcillation Day.

Furthermore:
David Kramer and Taliep Pietersen certainly deserves a mention for their success abroad, I think the one highly acclaimed show was "Poison" or something.

Anton Goosen, the first Afrikaans rock song to ever play on SA radio.

Mongo Groove - Great success abroad an highly regarded in Japan, funnily enough.

Johnny Clegg, the first mix race band (Joluka or Savuka, not sure?) in Apartheid South Africa to achieve nr one on local charts.

Clarabelle van Niekerk, very unique style, but only one album with not so many great song ons, but "Afrika" and "Roep die Engele" deserves a mention.

Lise Stassen, not mainstream but very good music.

Valiant Swart - excellent!

More recent:

Die Radio Kalahari Orkes, Ian Roberts (sloet) and his band of merry men is excellent.

Though not entirely my cup of tea, but worthwhile for not following the mainstream recipe.

Chris Chameleon, also fairly inovative.

Not worth a mention

All those artists who tour without a band, do not play an instrument, wear shiny clothes, listen to their own music while being driven in a van with their own face on.

Whilst we're going on a tour down memory lane I'd make specific mention of Roger Lucey and James Phillips (who also paraded as Bernoldus Niemand).  Both brilliant musicians with careers cut short, the former by the politics of the time and the latter killed in an accident en route to Grahamstown.

Two albums I'd recommend:

The Flames the best SA band of all time

The Manhattans " Vuka"

Dolly Radebe songstress of note

Tananas "Sipral" still my favourite driving album the bass just drives my foot into the accelerator

The Diamonds Dogs enjoyed live

Two bands that come to mind recently:

BLK JKS - signed to an overseas label (Secretly Canadian) as they wouldn't get anywhere on the SABC.  Played as back up for Alicia Keys at the 2010 World Cup opening concert, had their set cut by the TV people in favour of some pointless junket even though they were the only new young SA band there.  Here's a link to their world cup anthem:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNFJH8yoD9U

It's not too similar to their usual stuff so here's a nice mellow one from the After Robots album (Tselane):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsTL2bf-RxI

Wildernessking - very melodic, slightly ambient blackened metal, along with Black Math probably my current favourite local band.  If you can still find a copy, their debut album (Mystical Future) is excellent, if not, it's here at band camp.

Disappointed nobody's mentioned Die Antwoord yet!

Very controversial, I know. If you can get your mind past their lyrical content and the bizarre imagery, I think they're just brilliant (though doing that would be like castration). They're very big overseas. Their latest album, Mount Ninji And Da Nice Time Kid, is very different from their previous work and shows their artistic depth. Songs from the album are on their youtube channel.

Hou verby if you're sensitive to profanity.

I'm unable to get my head around Die Antwoord. Music is k@k, lyrics even k@kker. Rely on shock value rather than any sort of musical ability. Hence the reason they're so popular in Europe I suspect.

The two of them were in some move that we watched a while back - some sci-fi nonsense about saving the world from robots. Neil Blomkamp & his obligatory sidekick Sharlto Copley. We watched with morbid fascination as to how atrociously bad it was.

I'm most probably too old to be appreciative. That said neither of my children rate them as anything either?

You guys must probably not like hip-hop. Apart from the music genre, though, I don't blame anyone for disliking them. Most of their fans are international and not wise to the lyrics.

My problem with Die Antwoord is that what seems to have started as an art concept has continued in the same vein ever since with no real progression to the concept.  The music got pretty repetitive and the videos just very samey.  I saw them supporting RHCP in Cape Town and was very disappointed with their live show which seemed to consist mainly of trying to get the audience to swear along with them in Afrikaans.  I'll check out the newer stuff but having seen them on TV coverage of a German festival last year (it was on between German hip-hop artists who still seem to be inspired by Vanilla Ice), they did not seem to have evolved even then.

And as for 'Chappie'  :please:

Particularly like her on the a.s.k Trio CD on which she collaborated with two international artists (a Japanese and Dane I think).  I believe she lectures at UCT music department as well.

The psych rock scene in South Africa is really impressive. There was even a psych rock festival in November. First time I saw Kalahari Surfers and my mind was blown away.

Some bands worth mentioning:

Medicine Boy - dreampop mixed with a bit of noise rock with beautiful haunting vocals from Lucy Kruger
The Psalms - Excellent noise rock
Sol Gems - catchy psychedelic rock (similar to Tame Impala and Temples)
Retro Dizzy - great psychedelic surf rock

All their music should be available on bandcamp.

I have to mention Bateleur as well. They recently brought out their new album:

A really unique post rock band who mixes a lot of jazz elements into their music. They're really talented.

Samkelo Lelethu Mdolomba also known as Samthing Soweto is one of my favourite vocalist/musician Locally, very talented and creative.
So I checked it out and...

[copy-paste (former coworker, at soundcloud)]
i know you like jazz, [some jazz],...this moved away from jazz after the first 2-3 tracks but...and i don't know how much you like this za genre,.. but this is redefining the genre ...true to his own voice, not emulating the mainstream. The track i'm listening to now is jazzy again...with a hint of hip-hop vocals altho i don't mean it has anything to do with hip-hop / esp. not za hip-hop...
anyway, check it out.

PS: Genre, i could call it "zulu acapella". That seems to be the basis, then jazz vocal. Both quite far from what I usually listen to to, but this is quite..different, extraordinary.

Heh.  Local guys, look out for:

Roan van As (loving this guy's sound)
Monkeys in Boots (the guitarist used to work for me, EPIC dudes.  No CDs or official releases AFAIK, their music might be on iTunes or YT.  He gave me all their songs though)
Bad Peter (saw these guys performing at a wedding not too long ago, can't get over their music.  More on YouTube, only 5 songs officially released and on CD though)
Deon Bakkes and the Stolen Horses (swing, not my style, but the band is good)

That might be where they say they got some of their stuff, yeah.  They recently got rid of the bassist since he wasn't really into it anymore.  They're looking for a replacement so that they can seriously get the band up and running again.  Their music is great.

The guitarist's dad also used to make good music during the border war times, actually.  The song Bok van Blerk wrote, "Die Kaplyn", he dedicated to that man.  I forgot his name now, but it's printed in the booklet inside the Afrikanerhart CD case.

We went to his concert at Monte Casino and it was fantastic. Very emotional experience. I knew it was a farewell concert but had no idea it was because he is ill. Very sad.

If you've spent any length of time in this strange land at the bottom of Africa, do yourself a favour and go see him. Any doubt about having feelings for this country were just wiped out. Perhaps the best concert I've ever been to. We had the worst seats in the house, very back row and it was still spine-chilling. The man is a legend.

Edit* The opening act Taylor is just sensational as well. I know very little about her but she is special. She only did 3 songs.

So many worth mentioning. Where to start?

Old school - nude girls. (arno carstens once dedicated ''smiley skull of faith to me on oppikoppie)

SKUNK ANANSI, SARON GAS(BEFORE THEY WERE ORDERED TO CHANGE TO 'SEETHER')

And not to mention some locals who were named the south african versions of international idols, such as........... Late Freddie Nest, who could sing Chris De Burg to a tee, An afrikaans artist who i wont name, who was named ''The local Neil Diamond''

The list goes on.

Just ginger, Tweak, etc etc etc etc

So many grea locals.

We went to a 're-opening' for the Alhambra Theatre last night in support of efforts to save the building and to provide arts education for schools. Aside from the performance by the City Kids School (which was excellent) there was a lot of talking, ranging from mildly interesting to about 9.85 on the Pointless & Lethally Boring Scale.  :walled:

We debated leaving early, but I'm so glad we stayed, at the end Sibongile Khumalo sang 2 songs. Despite the poor sound engineering and half-dead crowd, she was amazing. The presence to take charge of an audience and the ability to convey such feeling and emotion using just her voice is something I don't think you can be taught. A true artist.  :notworthy:

Well that's the thing, I don't like opera.  I don't really understand it and have never sat through a full proper one. But I do like opera singers it seems. On the weekend we were at One Fox. The Gauteng Opera did a show that included some probably well known opera songs.  And popular ones from the likes of Johnny Clegg and Bright Blue.  I was moved to tears, it's unlike any other performances I've seen

I have just completed a 2 day film shoot in the M1A sound stage at SABC with the Soweto Gospel choir.

Now, firstly, I'm a rock fan and have zero interest in gospel, or vocal groups, but listening to these guys was an amazing experience.

They are seriously talented and pitch perfect. The soloists had amazing voices with the choir backing giving a perfect balance of rhythm and volume.

There is no foot tapping, or hand claps to keep the tempo, they are just spot on.

Amazing !

Megan Kate is a South African born and bred bint. Her love, passion and dedication to music has driven her ...... in the wrong direction towards the nostalgic Electro Sound of the 90s. Ploughed right through Sam Paganini Plaza and J-walked willy-nilly right over Avatism Ave, without looking left nor right, she found herself basking in the glory of a certain Black Strobe.

Megan Kate is not just a performer, she's an experience ... like no other with her loungey sunday sofa sound. Within minutes the crowd can be seen scuttling off as blood streams from their ears, clearly to go tell all of their friends of the brilliance and splendour that is Miss Megan Kate.

A lady to the very end, Megan enjoys long walks on the beach, a warm cup of tea and aggressively thrusting her clenched fist into air in harmony with the gentle hymns of Arnuad Rebotini and friends.

Bottomless Coffee Band remain my local music find of 2018/2019. I am particularly amazed at how Lourens is able to play harmonica, guitar and his pedal drum kit at the same time. Live it's even more incredible.

Don't think CH2 has been mentioned yet . Exceptionally talented guitar duo.
