General Discussion / Re: Fuse help + Audiophile fuses , snake oil or ?
« Last post by amirm on Today at 02:22:53 AM »
As to audiophile properties, my guess would be improved contact resistance, lower-resistance internal bonding, lower resistance and inductance filament and so on. Plenty of material on the web.
My one experience with audiophile fuses has been the opposite.  Went to a friend's house to listen to his system but his amp would not power up.  Pulled out the fuse and checked it with ohm-meter.  It would make intermittent contact!  So much so that at first I thought it was a healthy fuse.  But on re-checking, it would show open.  Changed the fuse with a garden variety one and all was well.

In years and years of repairing electronic equipment with tons of fuses in them -- both dead and good -- I had never seen a fuse that was faulty this way.  It was just shoddy construction.  I forget the brand but it is one of the top ones audiophiles use/talk about.

The thing is is that when you buy a mainstream fuse, it is made by a company that produces millions of them with proper process control.  The audiophile outfit that makes hundreds of these simply doesn't have that environment and you get what I saw.

With fuses providing safety as the primary function, I say stay away from these tweaks.

Okay.....didn't plan it this way but had to list Boccherini on the previous one...

So me again...How about your latest purchase LP/CD/Download/ any format. And one song that impressed you the most.

1. Got this earlier this week on LP:
     a-ha...Unplugged - Take on me
2. Krokodil - Getting Up For The Morning, no specific track yet, itís proggy, bluesy, psych rock from the 70s never thought Iíd see a copy
3. Fokofpolisiekar - Selfmedikasie: FLVJ (1 St studio album in 11 years and incredible crowdfunding initiative)
4. Foo Fighters - Concrete and Gold (a lot more melodic that the usual FF, thanks to musical direction of Greg Kurstin); song-wise either "The Sky Is A Neighborhood" or "Happy Ever After"
5.Amon Duul II - Carnival in Babylon - again, don't really want to choose a track as the album as a whole is awesome, if pushed, side B last track (Hawknose Harlekin) mainly for the Hawkwind meets Pink Floyd vibe
6. Black Country Communion - BCCIV - Wntire album is top class, so I'll choose the latest music video release "Last Song For My Resting Place" -

^^^ I moved to get out of the clutches of that thieving sack of **** that calls himself president, and so I donít ever have to apologise to my son because he has no future.  The music is a wonderful bonus.

i had the misfortune to watch the dark tower last night.
i have read the whole set of books, more than once. the movie only bears a passing resemblance to the book by including some of the characters, & the actual tower.
add in some matrix type effects & you have the elements of a monumental flop.
i only kept watching to see how they mutilated the plot... but i am thinking that any attempt to capture a story of that size & complexity (and flaws) is doomed to failure. like so many of stephen king based movies, the detail & descriptive elements in the book just do not translate to movies.

Headphones / Re: The headphone heads up thread

Yes. I also found them to be quite good considering B&W are more furniture company than audio company  Ok, that was very mean...

It's important to remember that there is a real need for fashion cans in this world. Headphones came to the fore with the general public due to Sony Walkman's, and Skullcandies and Beats need competition from people who know what they're doing. I'd buy these if I wasn't so happy with my Portapros -- and didn't have an urgent need for a new DAC by Friday.
