Title: Fostex Model E-2 To Keep or Not to Keep
Post by: gerberma on March 31, 2021, 11:26:07 AM
Good Morning folks.....Im wondering whether to part with this machine or hold onto it....I dont have the time to drag across boundaries to get is checked out cause its also damn heavy!!!
So wondering whether to hold onto it, or get rid and whats it worth. I got it as from a studio as part of a package, I really wanted the E6400 sampler but got this as well as a Sony 60 ES DAT Machine that needs a belt I think....the owner said they all worked. I know the sampler goes cause it powers up and I can do internal testing.
E-2 I dont even have tape reels to test, but it powers up everything looks nice and dandy....
Any thoughts?

I Googled it, and what a beauty! Man, if you don't want it I sure hope you'll hold on to it long enough for me to save up the money to buy it. ;D

Hi, thanks! I dont even know what they are currently worth and also how much its going to cost for me to bring it up to spec if I do decide to keep it. It is a lovely machine and its clean as well, just dont know whats happening on the inside! I will try to post some upfront pics later.

gerberma its value really rides primarily on the condition of the heads, if they are badly worn, then its not of much value as its not that easy to find good heads any longer, there are companies that have started manufacturing heads, but this does not cover all machines out there, and they are pricey as hell..

And then of course - willing seller willing buyer..

don't burn her yet, but sincerely those heads look dreadfully dirty, there is wear, but if we could see them after a good cleaning then that would help a ton in ascertaining condition, don't stress about the tape guides or anything else, just the heads themselves, should look something like this..

By the way, if you plan to keep her then welcome to the exclusive most expensive music format in the world club...

Update to a very informative thread. The Fostex has found a new home with Chas. I still have a lot to learn about tape technology and I think starting off with a machine without knowing its history maybe was not the way to go....since I didnt even know where to start in terms of testing....so my next tape machine will be a working one and preferably come with someone who can will show me the basics.

I am now hooked....so will be searching for an affordable machine in the near future as finances allow....we should have some sort of Master Classes.....sharing info on technologies like tape machines, maybe have people over, have a system setup....would be invaluable for some of us...

Thanks to all for your input, much appreciated....
