nice - understanding this also would help in understanding how to use EQ as well IMHO

No im asking only SA high end, are we as Bentley allowed?

When organising an event in trying times certain compromises have to be made. One was to limit the number of exhibitors to those brands with which we had an existing relationship. We have known and dealt with almost all the brands at the show for quite some time.
Space limitations precluded the inclusion of more brands as well.

However if Bentley had made contact when hearing about the show( like quite a few others did) we could have possibly arranged something.

In the future when we are not restricted by covid regulations we will be able to open the event up to far more exhibitors.

If so, what is this forum for, I repeat, music, and sound is subjective, not objective, so I keep to the line that I go by what I hear/percieve,  if it offends You when I say that some of the best speakers I have heard where equiped with field coil drivers perhaps You should read data sheets instead of discussing sound/hifi/music, if other persons impressions/thoughts are to be discarded by yet another "scientifically" based only on Your own "experience and vast knowledge/old age" Im about the same age and I would never say that anyone is wrong if the say they think this sounds good about something I think is realy lousy, even if measurements could prove it to be very poor, or very good.

Bravo!!

General Discussion / Re: Note 10 as a source
« Last post by naughty on Today at 09:21:14 PM »

@naughty - feel I will take your advice and get a better dac and a server- just not sure where how and  what to use, but will figure it out as I go along.

you don't have to get a microserver - the problem with a microserver if you intend to also use it for video is that it cant take any current ultraHD graphics cards - so possibly an entry level PC that can take full size graphics cards may do a bit better - for video i'm stuck at 1080p video which can be a problem if you have some ultraHD content ..... lucky for me i don't really ..... but a good laptop with ultraHD graphics capability will also do the trick too - if you intend to use it as a complete multimedia all-in-one source like i do

IMHO any PC source with a decent power supply will do the job as far as audio is concerned unless you are buying an ultra high resolution DAC and have your system in a totally treated dedicated room - though if its in a normal living/multi-purpose living room then any PC source will do for audio

what is important is to buy a really decent DAC that has all the functionality and performance that you want/need - a good DAC will accept lots of different sources and make them all work above most reasonable expectations for most people ..... yes if you have a really high standard system (i'm talking high end pre-amps with multiple monoblocks and really high end speakers etc then possibly you will benefit from a streamer but at that point you will be looking at every 1% extra you can gain for the amount of money you can spend - but if you have a decent well thought out system then the PC based setups are more than good enough as long as you have a good DAC

don't get hungover on details - just because i use a microserver doesn't mean that everyone else should .... it just means that this is what i found convenient and it suited my pocket cos i managed to get a G8 for R2k and a good second hand low profile graphics card for R1k - and it does surround sound and up to 1080p video all perfectly and it also does every audio format with decent software installed - add a good USB DAC and it can match most sources besides for the highest of the high end audio sources IMHO but where i use the microserver because it was what  could afford at the time (and also some people may like to call me a cheapskate though i prefer sensible or thrifty) but it does my job way more than good enough for my purposes give that i don't have a multi million rand system nor a treated dedicated room where you will even hear an ant fart BUT IMHO these PC based solutions will not be embarrassed by most decent to good systems which is what you seem to have - the mileage may vary for guys who either have end game stuff new or who purchased second hand high end items of a very high level at which point they can definitely benefit from a better source

Not another battlefield of subjective hearing comparisons - to be kind: We have advanced to far better instrumentation with which to record real differences than the human hearing mechanism . . .

Probably the most stupid thing I have heard here, music is subjective, or do You have a scientific meaurement  for God and bad records?
A measurement that prooves that an ancient horn design  with a full range driver "sounds" bad, that a high resolution digital 24 bit stream of Johnny Cash, American Recordings lV the man comes around "sounds" better than on a Thorens Reference or a Micro DDX1000 with a Stax UA70 12" and an Ortofon SL15?

Technical facts and science is one of the fundaments of music replay equipment for sure, but the enjoyment of that equipment is totally subjective, cant be measured, just as music quality cant be measured.

With all the latest measuring equipment, latest technical facts related to audio replay prooving that a 9710 in a TQWT doesnt sound good, it probably still does, to me.

General Discussion / Sony TC-U2 Cassette Player
« Last post by ruaansiebrits on Today at 08:56:06 PM »
Dear all

I have a Sony TC-U2 cassette player. It is not functioning at the moment as some of the bands need to be replaced.

Any suggestions for a service provider that will be able to assist in the Cape Town area?

Thank you in advance.

Open Talk / Re: Amazon vs Takealot

And indeed so, in spite of a weekend and also a public holiday in  between. The parcel arrived yesterday, well done Amazon!

But wait - that's not all. This morning I received an email purporting to come from Amazon, stating I am getting a refund of $20.74 for "Over-charged shipping fees", I thought it was a scam and was going to delete it. But when I checked the actual order on the website, there it was - this is completely unexpected.

So now I will look for something else to order from Amazon, I am enjoying the experience.

This happens quite often.
The shipping cost, import duties and VAT cost is estimated when you check out and, in the event that it turns out cheaper once delivered, you are refunded the amount.

I have had 2 such refunds in the last 6 orders I placed.

The ones where the guitar has a bit of delay/tremolo pedal on it, and a little bit of overdrive as well.  Try playing a guitar plain without any trem/delay/od/chorus/phase/wah and find that you cannot be any rock/pop/dub/ambient hero!  Heck, even an acoustic guitar part has reverb on it nowadays!
