Help! Ubuntu or Linux Mint - or ??
« on: May 22, 2011, 02:34:38 PM »
I have an old Acer TravelMate 2501LC Laptop that has choked itself to death on XP3. I downloaded Ubuntu 1104 and installed it as a dual-boot system on the Acer. I like it, but hate the purple colour it uses on bootup - what the hell were they thinking??

Ubuntu is so user-friendly that I have now decided to wipe my XP-partitioned HD completely and only use Linux. But the question of Linux Mint arises: I had previously played a bit with this and liked it as well. So now I need suggestions from the clever guys - do I install Mint or Ubuntu? I want the one that is easiest for a newbie to play with and just hate that yucky purple start-up screen from Ubuntu.

Specs of the Acer:

15" XGA TFT LCD
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.8GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP
1 GB DDR400 (? - I think - I upgraded it from the original 512GB DDR333 SDRAM)
40GB Ultra ATA/100 HDD
DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive.

I also would probably prefer to wipe all data on the partitioned drive and convert to only one drive ("C") - my Partition Manager 8 bombs out on opening claiming there is an error in the HDD which it wants to fix - not going that way again, I had the same problem with another Laptop and had to re-format the drive completely at great loss of brain power.

 All replies will be gratefully received, I would like to do this today still so hope I am not interrupting any afternoon naps.

I don't know Mint at all. In fact, I don't even know the standard Ubuntu that well (GUI's are for sissies). Just the fact that Ubuntu (to me) seems more common should make it obvious which one to choose for a noob.
Resistance is not futile; it is voltage divided by current (R=V/I)

As Gert says, go with Ubuntu, particularly as there's a lot of new stuff in the release you're using and I've no idea how current or stable the Mint implementation is at this juncture.

Regarding one partition, backup your data, reboot from the Ubuntu CD and have it install rather than fire up the Live CD.  When prompted tell it to use your entire disk - it'll do the partitioning etc automagically.

Re the purple (not seen it, I'm too lazy to upgrade at present) it's changeable: http://tipsforu2010.blogspot.com/2011/04/change-login-screen-in-ubuntu-1104.html

This website contains a lot of handy stuff to get you going with mp3, dvd playback etc. (i.e. all the proprierary stuff) with a few clicks. http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Natty

Oh, if you find yourself missing mp3tag, install puddletag.

Guess you're not ALL old dog :P

I'm a die-hard Debian fan from way back when, so Ubuntu all the way for me. But if the aesthetics annoy you so much and you can't figure out how change them yourself, you can also try Fedora - it's very popular and has frequent releases so the included software is always up to date.

What do you plan on using the laptop for - happy to suggest some packages if you're looking for windows replacements?

Have no idea what I will be using the laptop for... I just gave up on Windoze because the laptop had been standing for about 6 months prior to switching it on. It took 45 minutes to open XP (SP3 and all updates upto about Dec 2010 were installed). A similar period of time to open ANY application. After a dozen or so further XP updates and much defrag/delete/defrag, it only took a few seconds to open anything, including FF4, and all seemed well. Then on Friday evening the newly-updated FF4.01 froze and I figured "That's it! You've had your chance."

So I figured I may as well hone my (lack of) Linux skills as I was not using the laptop for anything in particular.

I would like to find a Linux program that can import files from Movie Collector & Music Collector - that would be useful.

Data Crow seems to be one that could work. Many thanks for your assistance.  :)

I've downloaded Datacrow Full Version Installer 3.9.7 and I get what is evident from the screenshot below.

How do I run this programme? I expected a screenshot similar to Collectorz Music Collector:

I really need to get out of this Windows mindset!

This is how it is supposed to look, from the screenshots available on the datacrow webpage:

So I guess the problem lies with me...  ::) :-[

from thgeir FAQ:

Ubuntu 10 (and higher versions) issues

Firstly install Sun from Java:
# sun-java6-jre
# sun-java6-plugin (the plugin to make mozilla programs work).
The EULA needs to be accepted for the install to complete.
Then make this Java version the default Java version by running the following command in the terminal
sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun
(Thanks to Thane for providing details).

I downloaded the installation and now I got myself a jar file .. ?

Try a "double-click" first. The jar file is a self-executing file. If that didn't help at all it means you either you have no Java Runtime Environment installed or Java is not correctly setup. If Java is not installed go to the Java homepage and download the latest version. If Java is installed, type (in the folder where Data Crow is located): java -Xmx256m -jar <filename>

~~~~~~~~~~
Of couse you could create a launcher to do that for you so all you do is click an icon as you do for other apps.
I had double-clicked on the jar file, and this gave me the second screen shot in my post #10 above.
Prior to this, I tried installing Java according to these steps:
1. Open Terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal
2. Next, type the following into the terminal: sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-fonts sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin and press Enter
3. Wait until it loads entirely, then the terminal will change into an old-fashioned window with no mouse user interface. Use the down arrow to scroll down until you can't scroll further. Then press the right arrow and hit enter to accept the license agreement.
4. After accepting the license agreement, Java will download and it will ask you several questions about configuration which you should choose based on what you want.
After trying to puzzle out the "sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-fonts sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin" problem for over half an hour, I eventually got somewhere, but only to be told that the particular version of Java is not available. Would this have been replaced perhaps by a newer version of Java?
Thanks for all your patience, I am at the bottom end of a learning curve!
