Cheap over-ear headphones
« on: July 20, 2021, 04:45:51 PM »
A friend is looking for some over-ear headphones.
Very much an entry-level budget of approx. R500.00.

He showed me the following:
https://www.takealot.com/powerworks-hpw3000-studio-closed-back-dynamic-headphones/PLID71934755/reviews/1

My take is that it looks like junk, but I may well be mistaken.

Any suggestions for really cheap over-ear headphones for gaming use?

These Audio Technica's are slightly over R500 but pretty decent for the money https://www.cplanaudio.co.za/collections/c-plan-specials-incredible-value/products/audiotechnica-ath-ax3is-sonicfuel-over-ear-headphones-black

Otherwise I do have a set of Pioneer SE-A1000 I can let go for R500

You mention gaming use. Does that mean he wants a headset with a built-in mic?

(Also worth noting the ones at your Takealot link are out of stock).

No mic required as he has a separate microphone.

Over your friend's budget but the Steelseries Arctis 1 is pretty good.
https://www.wootware.co.za/steelseries-arctis-1-multi-platform-black-wired-stereo-gaming-headset.html

I own and use the wireless version of this set. It is light and extremely comfortable with very large earpads that cover your ears completely.
The built in mic is also very decent. The mic can be removed.

The build is a bit "plasticy" but the main headstrap has a steel structure, so they are not fragile.
They also sound pretty good for music use. They also carry some street cred as being "proper gaming headphones".

I wish we could get the Creative Aurvana Live models with the biocellulose drivers in SA sans Rainforest tax. They seem to hit far above their price. Does anyone have experience with them?

I have been seeing a lot of Philips SHP9500 used (here and on Carbonite) as low as R1000 and I think that would be a massive step up from anything for R500 and most other things for R1000. I know itís double, but I have a pair and thoroughly enjoy them (better than my AKG K612s I used to have).

They are open back and when I have gamed with them, that made for a more open and spacious feel than my closed-backed cans. Just need a bit of boost to lower base and that seems a little less pronounced than others Iíve tried.

Else, look at Carbonite for gaming headsets. There are dozens for sale and often at good prices.
