Do Amplifiers impart a sonic signature to music

Ideally, any audio equipment is not supposed to change the audio signal. What's recorded should come out of the speakers. I've found that different amplifiers sound different e.g. more bass, tighter bass, pace, soundstage.

Then there's an AVR (in direct mode stereo or Pure Direct) vs Stereo. I've found that the AVR even in Stereo is more "punchy" and overall "powerful".

Is this the intention or am I imagining things ?

Isn't the best amplifier one that just increases the Sine Wave's amplitude without imparting a "signature"
