iPhone/iPad lighting to USB/optical converter
« on: February 28, 2021, 12:25:12 PM »
I would like to connect an iPhone (lighting output) to a DAC, what would be the recommended option?

The input USB specifications are: USB 2.0 full speed compliant  (USB audio class 1.0)

In other words, what would be the best adapter/converter to use?

Thanks

Just remember the signal coming out of an iphone has already been converted to analogue (been through the phone's internal DAC), it is not a digital stream, so not sure whether it makes sense to run into another DAC? In the ipod's heyday there were digital docks that could extract a pure digital signal from the ipod device, but your phone output would be analogue already.

? But there are Apple dongle DAC...

[edit:] I think you need the camera kit dongle.

It seems the reason for it is that the iPhone output is very low mV.

The lightning to 3.5mm contains a DAC.

The camera kit would be the correct device for this function - it converts from lightning to USB. If it actually works with that DAC depends on a couple of factors, but most notably the reported current requirement by the DAC - the camera kit is known to be quirky in that regard.

I stand corrected, the lightning port does put out digital and the 'lightning to 3.5mm' adaptor does contain a DAC. So conceivably a lightning to USB cable should feed the DAC a digital signal - it just needs to have a USB-B plug.

CCK (camera connection kit lightening to USB) plus a USB A-B cable.  Pretty sure that dac will power the usb chip itself so no current draw from cck/phone.

In fact I have done this with iPhone and that MF dac for a customer about a year ago no problems.

Downside is battery of phone or pad will run down while playing.

This one will allow phone to also be charged afaik.

DO NOT BUY A GENERIC ONE, it is likely not to work.

Took a chance with one of these

Got lucky and it seemed to work without issues with the phone and Hip DAC

The problem with the generic ones are that they usually work, for now. They are reverse-engineered and so usually last until the next major update.

We've had some issues with a generic bluetooth adapter (to connect wired earphones). I would rather pay a bit more and get a quality product.

Having said that, some 3rd party products are very good (Furutech, for example).

An update, I bought the Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter in the end.

It works very well, and one can charge the phone whilst using it.

The one I would buy if I had to buy now for the charging function.

I use one of these.. works like a charm!  It comes with various adaptors, however not sure it will support the latest Apple devices though.

Different option.  Gen 3 Apple TV with optical to DAC works great for me.  Even the wife can use it, just renamed the Apple TV to the input on the amp so now Rotel OPT1 shows up on the iPhone for connection and Rotel set to OPT1 and the rest just works
