Where to buy RAM online or in greater JHB?
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:45:30 AM »
One of my (rarely used) workstation PCs has become susceptible to periodic hanging/ freezing and I've isolated the problem to the RAM.  I originally had 4x Corsair DDR2 CM2X1024-6400C4DHX 4-4-4-12 chips installed and through a process of elimination isolated one I believe to be bad and things were fine for around 6 months thereafter.  Now the pattern of behaviour is repeating so I want to go out and replace all the RAM chips.

Also, having just purchased a HP Proliant Microserver I'm looking to add 2x 4GB PC3 DDR3 RAM chips.

Kingston would probably do fine in both cases.

Any recommendations as to where to buy RAM online and take delivery or collect within the week?

Prophecy and Sybaritic are good choices.

Can you use non-ECC RAM in that microserver? I got the impression it used ECC RAM?
Resistance is not futile; it is voltage divided by current (R=V/I)

Looking at the arstechnica forum it would seem so, I've downloaded but not checked the detailed spec as yet. Will confirm as soon as I've done so.

I'm currently running 4GB non-ECC ram in one that I had lying around.

Thx Gideon.  Could you clarify RAM spec - the spec doc states: "Memory Type PC3-10600E unbuffered DDR3 ECC operating at 800MHz" and then goes on to list "HP 4GB (1x4GB) Dual Rank x8 PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) Unbuffered CAS-9" as memory options available from HP.

Given the box's purpose I'm planning on throwing 8GB at it and I want to use the fastest RAM the board will take.

Will look tonight. I have DDR3-1333 ram in but will check at what speed they are running.

Also try the guys at PC International on Hendrik Verwoerd in Randburg (http://www.pcint.co.za/). Most of the time, their retail prices beat what I can get directly from wholesalers.

Well still trying to see whether I can find any FreeBSD package that can display ram speeds. Any suggestions?

I have heard good things about PC International. I have ordered from Prophecy quite a few times. Their service rocks.

The FSB of the CPU determines the speed of what the RAM will run at and the although DDR3 RAM clock tripples to 1333Mhz....
ECC DDR3 RAM is needed

You can use either ECC or non-ECC ram. Just a couple of correction FSB is not used in these AMD machines and is not used in any of the new Intel or AMD machines. Secondly DDR3 does not mean 3xFSB and it is still only 2xFSB (if you have a generation that uses FSB).

it than what I meant?, No!

DDR3 clock tripples to give 1333Mhz RAM.

Clearly I misunderstood you. So from what does it tripple then?
