This seems to be a more recent trend on how entry level amps are specced:
As an example since I just got one: Onkyo HT-R495 (Same, it appears, as TX-SR494 but from an all in one kit with speakers etc):
Power output (Front L/R / Center / Surround L/R / Height L/R):
160 W/Ch (6 Ω, 1 kHz, 10% THD, 1 channel driven)
135 W/Ch (6 Ω, 1 kHz, 1% THD, 1 channel driven, IEC)
THD+N (Total Harmonic Distortion + Noise)
0.08% (20 Hz?20 kHz, Half Power)
So half power? Half of what 160w or 135w? 1 channel driven, 2 channels or all channels driven? (not likely all channels since has a max power consumption of 480w). At 6 ohms, 8 ohms?
I was aware of this before buying the unit and a practical 67 or 80w/channel is more than my application needs, but I feel for the sucker that bought the same thinking he was getting a powerful amp
