All this talk of diffusors has had me scratching my head and looking at my ceiling.... So I decided to build some at 30mm pitch with end up measuring 1.2m x 0.780m at a full 190mm deep. I'll share some pics a little bit later, but the first heard impression is that it works well.
So let's build a 2D prime root difuser
