How to get a temporary vehicle licence?
« on: February 12, 2020, 09:47:14 AM »
Just hoping to find out if anyone else has done this recently, and what the steps/costs/documents are.
I want to get a temporary licence for a car with Lesotho plates & expired Lesotho registration.
This is so I can drive it to Lesotho, ownership can be changed, and the car can then be registered in ZA.

I want to go to the licencing department knowing what the required steps steps/costs/documents are.
Importantly, do I have to book online, before I even go to the licencing dept?
Any and all detail is appreciated!

Thanks!

Customs and Excise will have to get involved, as it is technically an import

Have a word with them first

The import will happen down the line, just first need to get to Lesotho to change ownership, and will also renew the Lesotho licence while there.
So just to get from SA to Lesotho, will need a temporary vehicle licence.
Just trying to preplan the requirements of the temporary SA licence.

Does the car have to physically be there?
I dont think you will be able to get a temp permit without  as the car will not be on the system at all.
Or maybe a dealership can assist in getting one.
Or just get a trailer and tow it to lesotho?
How far are you from lesotho?

I'm in gauteng, and towing isn't really an option...

I'm going to try get a special temporary vehicle licence with the intent of registering the car in SA.

That's what this link implies. If I am correct?
