ADSL vs VDSL telkom?
« on: January 21, 2020, 11:58:22 AM »
I run a afrihost 6-8mb/s adsl, on a telkom line. Now I want to upgrade/increase to 40mb/s. Afrihost has an ADSL option of R1300 (line rental included) and Telkom a VDSL for R804 excluding line rental.

Apart from telkom seeming cheaper just a question or 2:
What is/is there a huge difference between ADSL and VDSL?, and
How reliable is Telkom internet service?

On the second part of your question, there is a fair difference between ADSL and VDSL.

I had 20Mbps ADSL and achieved a real world 16Mbps, and switching over to the VDSL gave me around 18Mbps.Nothing changed except the ADSL/VDSL profile.

You obviously need to have the VDSL modem, and Telkom need to provision you on their side.

I used to run a 10mb/s ADSL line, lucky if I achieved 8mb/s. I then switched over to VDSL 20mb/s line and my downloads are much more consistent, very happy. Both services from Afrihost.

I also found about swapping the ADSL modem in favour of a VDSL modem the hard way... ;)
