Speaker cloth - where to buy?
« on: October 15, 2019, 01:22:18 PM »
Hi all

A client has asked me to recover a Marshall 2x12 speaker baffle in black, Toms want R850 per meter for the real thing.......

Anyone have a source for some nice fairly heavy duty cloth that does not break the bank?

Thanks Peter

I just did mine and used heavy duty T-shirting from my wife's favourite material shop.

Pleasure, in case you are worried about stretching over the frame edges, use black felt first over the frame and the use the final cloth over the felt.

I used 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ High Strength Adhesive Spray 90. Works a treat as you spray the frame, leave it to become tacky and then simply stick the felt on. Then spray the felt and stick the cloth on. Will never come loose.

Further to this, can you just use any material or wont the weight and thickness cause issues with the sound?

Hi Matt

The main criterion is the weave of the cloth. A loose weave can be quite transparent acoustically whereas a tight weave like velvet affects the sound. Have someone talk to you with and without the material in front of their mouths to check the material's effect.
Then a decision can be made on the suitability of the material.
