MAC or WINDOWS LAPTOP
« on: October 03, 2019, 01:25:07 PM »
So im contemplating a LAPTOP upgrade as my 12 year old Lenovo is giving up the ghost.

The Laptop was being used for Web browsing, excel and word spread sheets and Foobar for the audio playback. i will possibly be considering ROON at some stage maybe a couple of years down the line.

What should i be looking at and which operating system, the one thing i find tedious (to be polite) with Windows is 1. the OS and all the issues that come with it (unstoppable updates, with system changes) and 2. the fact that drivers are required with everything. Is going the MAC route going to resolve that? never owned or used a Mac over a long period of time.

Any feedback most welcome

Listening put on hold for a while, but end game reached. Couldnt be happier with my system. Next will be new room tweaks.

In exactly the same boat as you right now.
The one issue is that I find the Mac's flipping expensive, but everyone that uses them say that it was the best switch they have made.

Rather go for the Mac, there are some decent second hand machines available.

I have a 13" MacBook Pro that's been going strong for more than 5 years now (upgraded with an SSD drive and more memory along the way).

Besides here where would one look at "Safe" used Macs?

Macshack in Johannesburg. Shop is situated at the Dimension Data campus - 011 575 1642. Also google their website, it will show you what they have. I also think they have a Centurion shop.

I just bought an early 2011 13" Macbook Pro from a friend, popped in a new battery, bought a charger off takelot.com, and upgraded to a decent SSD, that thing is running better than anything else windows based that I could've bought new for the money I spent, which was around R4900 in total.

I've mad the switch over to Mac in 2015 and currently own two Macbooks. 2015 Macbook Pro and 2017 Macbook Air, and personally I would never make the change back to Windows machines even though it's my job to fix them.

There is a company based in Brooklyn, Pretoria called Mac Empire that sells pre-loved / refurbished Mac Books at reasonable prices. http://macempire.co.za/product-category/pre-loved-macbooks/

Totally agree. Changed to Mac 9 years ago and will never go back. Everything always works and is stable. Audirvana on Mac sounds very good

I really like Macs, but I'd wait getting one till Apple switch out the scissor type switch based keyboards. It is not cool having a keyboard that you have to possibly replace out of warranty at a huge expense. Mac OS on the other hand remains a fantastic operation system, especially compared to Windows 10.
The Macbook Pro's from the 2015 models downward have a better selection of ports and keyboards than the current range of Macbook computers in my book. I have a 2012 Macbook Air is still going strong at 7 years old, but it is now in need of a new battery, but apart from that it still looks in very good nick and still works fine.
It is a pity Apple had to change sacrifice convenience and thinness to accommodate a flaky keyboard and TB3 setup that forces you to use dongles for everything. Also not a fan of the touchbar on the newer models.

I am about to buy a new laptop and considered a MacBook however I am going to stick with Windows.

Probably go for an XPS 9370 or 9380 with 4K touch display.

Some good advice - Fly to Thailand and have the battery replaced there. It is cheaper including all accommodation and tickets than having it done in SA. Been there, did the sums ...
