The cassette deck we all wanted

Nakamichi, Revox, Eumig?

No. Schoolboys in the late 70s never heard of those. But this was the one that was advertised in all non audio magazines. The one we all wanted so badly-in silver though.

Lovely! That takes me back.

In the 70s/80s there was a little shop tucked away on the Cape Flats called Taj Radio & TV (or maybe just Taj back then). They had the most fantastic collection of Japanese electronics that no other shop in Cape Town offered (actually, one shop came close: Silverstones in Cape Town CBD, but with less variety). Browsing this store was like paging through a hi-fi brochure. I was a teen back then, and didn't really understand what I was looking at, yet was in total awe. I wonder if anyone on the forum has the back story to this fascinating shop. Taj Radio & TV still exists today, but it is not the same (understandably).

I had dreams about other things that I saw in 9 1/2 weeks!

Notice on the demo video, there is a Nakamichi Dragon underneath the 505.  That was the deck we all wanted in the 80s but could never (and still can never) afford.  That AIWA is a thing of beauty though.

Beautiful machine. I kind of lusted after the slightly later Aiwa's, but that is magnificent.

It was the RX505 for me.  Ended up with an Aiwa.  Same machine I had appeared to be used as a chassis for NAD and Rotel.  Was the ADF270 I think.  Basic, cheap but better than any of my mates meaning I did many transcripts for many but always got a transcript for me too.
