Brinkmann Nyquist. Best DAC I've heard so far, period.
Otherwise at a lower cost the Chord Hugo was also very impressive.

Nice... $18,000 though - no thanks. The Hugo is really neat and compact, but no balanced outputs struck it off the list for me.

Correction, Hugo TT. Includes balanced outputs. Spent a week with one and is just sublime.

Agreed - but out of price range for me. (TT2)

The iFi is the only DAC that run and compete with EMMLabs, Brinkman and dCS

DIY with a Soekris could be an option with your handiwork skills too.

I think the Aqua DAC is a shade better than any of these mentioned above

There is also the Denafrips Terminator, but close to R70k nowadays.   It is very popular with readers of the Audiophile Style forum

You can add the Schiit Gungnir Multibit within your price bracket, landed in SA direct from Schiit.
Mobile: LG V30, CA Andromeda
Portable: LH Labs GO2A SE, KEF M500
Home: Soekris DAC1541, Genelec 8030+7050, Eddie Current Black Widow II, HD600

I would suggest a Soekris DAC1321 (unbalanced) and DAC1541 (balanced but with headphone output and over budget) way above the ARES.

I misread the budget so Soekris DAC1541 or DAM1941 DIY both should leave money to spare.

Great response all! These are tickling my fancy at this moment.

Aqua LeVoce,
iFi DSD pro,
Soekris DAC 1541

Always a big ask, but if any forum member that knows and trusts me would be willing to part with theirs (above examples) for a few hours for testing, I would be most obliged.

My vote is also the iFi iDSD Pro dac: settings - valve output stage (not valve Plus) with Bit Perfect Plus mode

You owe it to yourself to audition it  ;D

... Bit Perfect Plus mode ...

This may cause a lot of debate

This would be my choice if I had your kind of budget.
