So I bought a NAD 310 off gumtree. The price is right for what I need it for ( a garage amp - since I spend so much time there)...
All works fine other than the big thud when you turn it on... Also a slight physical hum from the transformers...
So I google 'Nad 310 transformer hum' to see if there is a solution out there. Of course all i find is info about the torroidal that the amp has... But. i can clearly see normal transformers through the ventilation holes...
I found this page: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1776123&postcount=3
This is what I have...

Hey! who took my toroid?
I am assuming a repair was affected at some stage. There is a date scribed on the inside that says: 31/07/09 - 55092
