Best router for 1gbps internet.
« on: July 24, 2019, 10:03:21 AM »
Hi all

I was wondering what the best router would be for a 1gbps internet line. I currently have 2x Apple Airport Extreme's. They work well but i am wondering if i can do better. I have used an Asus AC87U before and liked it a lot but i was using that as the router and then the AirPorts for the wifi. I did not like this setup and just used the AirPorts.

Depends on how much you want to spend.
I'd suggest looking at Ubiquiti, especially their enterprise range, Unifi. Pair it with a "USG" (Unifi Security Gateway) for routing and firewalling. And potentially a Unifi PoE switch, and of course some dual band AP's. I recommende the AC Lite or LR.

Otherwise something like the Ubiquiti Amplifi series. Add Mesh nodes as you encounter deadspots.

I really like Ubiquiti's products.  Our setup at home (for reference on coverage - an old, thick walled, single story, 400m2 house) is:

* USG - Handles the routing & firewalling
* US-8-60W - An 8 port switch with 4 ports that offer POE
* UAP-AC-Lite - 3 of these units provide full coverage at home.

I'm hosting my Unifi Controller in a Google Cloud environment.

Cost wise, I can't recall exactly, but somewhere in the region of R6500.

We are unfortunately limited to 100Mb fibre (lucky you for having 1Gb), but this setup has served us well in all of our streaming and other needs.

I read the question as router (ie before WiFi)?

If so, anything with a dedicated 1Gbit dedicated WAN. Maybe the Zyxel VMG3625?

Otherwise, the others answered ...  a mesh is a decent solution :) The standard reply is Ubiquity but there's a product called AirTies which is as good or better.  Unfortunately, it doesn't have the brand name so no one looks at it

The Ubiquiti USG is a router.

Before I got the USG, we had a TP Link Archer D7.  As long as your choice of router has a WAN/EWAN port and the switch component of the unit is 1Gb, you're sorted.

I personally am not too fond of the Zyxel units - to each his own though.

Just remember that if you go for the USG and want IPS enabled along with a 1gbps connection you'll need one of the beefier models

Warning: Enabling IDS/IPS will affect the device maximum throughput. USG: 85 Mbps, USG-Pro: 250 Mbps, USG-XG-8: 1 Gbps.

Yea I recommended because of cost - I think it alone is half the price of the USG, let alone any of the other ad ons. It also works for most people, but your route may be best if you have a larger house and your budget multiples bigger :)

Hi

Thank you for all the advice. After some testing i am happy with the Apple Airport Extremes. I think i am going to wait for 802.11AX or WiFi 6. Asus have some routers out at the moment but they are about R8-10k.

I am seriously looking at the Ubiquiti stuff though. Will wait for the WiFi 6 stuff though. Will upgrade to a 10gbps network at the same time.
