Control 4 and Roon
« on: May 15, 2019, 11:51:43 AM »
Been trying to read if one can use Roon on Control 4.
Using an HP Gen 8 and Windows as the platform.
Read this on Roon Website:

Control4 Driver for Nucleus

Roon provides Control4 drivers for use with the Nucleus and Nucleus+.

Note: These drivers require a Nucleus or Nucleus+, and are not compatible with Roon cores running on other platforms.
Overview

Browsing of Roon’s Library and Music Services from Control4
        Library
        TIDAL
        Qobuz
        Search
        Playlists
        Genre Browsing
Control of Roon’s zones from Control4
        Transport controls
        Now Playing information
        Volume/Mute controls
        Standby
        Zone Grouping

There are two drivers: the Roon Core driver, which uses several AVSwitch proxies and manages the connection to the Nucleus, and the Roon Zone driver, which uses the Media Service Proxy (MSP) and Amplifier Proxy to manage a single output device.

These drivers are compatible with Roon 1.4 (version 306) and above and Control4 version 2.9.1 and above.

Please help me make sense of this? and can i?
control 4 is what distributes music in my home.

Just found out that Nucleus and Nucleus+ are built and sold by Roon Labs. and the drivers for Control 4 are only loaded onto the software that they install on those. >:(

Yeah.
Costs USD 2400.00 for the plus and $1400 for the nucleus.
Absolutely ridiculous i must say.

You see the problem is that Control 4 is not a standard Roon Endpoint. So when you download and install the "standard" Roon, it does not provide communications with Control4.

Nucleus is an all-in-one pc that runs an integrated operating system that includes Roon. In that OS, they have added the functionality to allow Roon to "see" the Control4 endpoints.

The Control4 drivers are not loaded into Roon, but rather the integrated OS that is loaded onto the Nucleus. That is the reason why you need the Nucleus.

I'm not familiar with Control4 and how it works, but a raspberry pi or similar can act as a Roon Endpoint, so if your control4 zones has an auxiliary input you can send music to the Pi.

Hmm. Thats an idea. will ask them.
Roon sees my Pre Pro as an endpoint, and the C4 controller is in that room as well, so perhaps even through that? in other words, send a signal from the Pre Pro to the C4 controller and then distribute?

Jip can work. Either via a digital out from your pre-pro or even a set of pre-outs.
