I am guessing they arenít considered Ďhipí

It's just an odd spelling of Arun, a very common name.   (Transliteration of the 'u' sound (as in ****klap) was typically done as 'oo' until sometime later 1900s, until the transliteration became more standardised.)

Some of those [OP] names were commonly used in SA until the last generation or so. Went out of fashion among British after 1950 or so.

Very interesting Shonver, she is a white woman born in the Eastern Cape in the 1930's. Surname Downey

The name may be common in other cultures but I haven't come across it before.

Names tend to follow celebrities. Maria was all but out and then Sharopova came and reignited the trend.
