Soda Stream
« on: April 15, 2019, 10:44:34 AM »
I'm thinking of getting one of these, especially as I've developed a taste for sparkling water, which I used to hate.
Anyone have any comment's on these machines and what it's like to own ?

I have one, use it a lot. Basically bulletproof (I have the cheap basic plastic one not the fancier ones), gas is cheap available from any supermarket.  We don't drink Coke, etc as it's crazy sweet and loaded with sugar. Soda water, little bit of Rose's lime juice, great alternative to beer/wine.

Little bit of reservation as it's an Israeli company previously with a major factory in the occupied West Bank, but the owners seem to be operating with a fair degree of integrity in a complicated world.

Same here, basically all we drink at home, well, apart form the beer, whisky and wine. And maybe a gin and tonic now and again.

My young kids call it "busy water" (not fizzy). They know no better!

I fail to see how this will affect one's life, or is even relevant here in our kitchens, fizzing water.

And Soda is no replacement for beer :nutter: :ROFLMAO:
In the word : Scent, is it the S or the C that is silent?

You can make student champagne with it, add some bubbles to your wine and there you are.

Well I looks like I should get one.
Two things, the first is that it's now owned by Pepsi, so the Israel thing is Moot and you say student champagne.
Does that mean one can use it to "Fizz up" wine or flat coke ?
I have 3 x 2L of Coke and Fanta light in the cupboard, which is probably flat by now.

Just don't try carbonating milk with it. (or coffee)

If you like explosions and wine everywhere - yes.  Specially when it comes to beer or red wine - don't try it unless you do a lot of research first.

Apparently white wine is fine, but really, just YT some videos on carbonating wines.  At the very least, it's entertaining :P

Whenever I have tried carbonating stuff already containing sugar and flavours itís become a mess.  Never researched after.  Just gave up.

Fizzing Milk did cross my mind.

It tends to explode the milk (the gas doesn't seem to dissolve particularly) and gives it an odd taste which some of the syrups may counteract.  Fizzy coffee is just nasty.  Seemed like a good idea at the time, but I was rather drunk.

Had 2 units in the past decade or so. I had a glitch on the new model (Soda Club) where the 500ml bottles would not work. The 500ml bottles would not seal in the machine so prevented CO2 from fizzing the water. The 1 litre bottle works 100%. Go figure. The local agents were utterly useless. I had to go to their premises to show them the problem and they saw it was not a user fault. They were not interested in getting a solution - their recommendation was that I not to use 500ml bottles and only the 1000ml ones ! I think they realised it was a factory fault but i am guessing that the possible expense to replace them was too high... Another case of pathetic service.
