Is there any merit in normalizing harsh sounding audio files with something like Audacity? I played around with one such file in my iTunes library this morning by following this procedure:

Convert ALAC to AIFF (in order to edit with Audacity);
Normalize the AIFF file in Audacity;
Export and re-convert to ALAC;
Re-import into iTunes.

The resulting file was down 12 kbps compared to the original and it sounds a tad "softer" on headphones in iTunes. Any suggestions, or is this just a useless waste of time?
