Tidal or Qobuz
« on: January 12, 2019, 01:00:40 PM »
Anyone compared the two?

I am curious after an industry friend said she clearly prefers Qobuz.

The selections are slanted Americano vs Europa and there seems to be a lot more good classical on Qobuz.  Jazz selection strong too.
Their High Res options avoid the Massive Question sans Answer protocol too.

Anyone compared.

Is Kobus hier?

Kinda tired of pretending to live in Kuala Lumpur or on Kerguelen to be able to subscribe  to just about anything.

El dink Koos is op pad.

They think I am Scottish with a US PayPal account.

But.  I can guarantee itís coming.

Because.

Tadadada.

Once you have a valid login in you can subscribe in nice perfect rand figures via the iTunes app.

Iow.  HiFi subscription R399 via ITunes once you have a login set up via a foreign land.

So the billing is ready.   The rights are perhaps just under negotiations.

Bizarre.

There's a US open beta going now if you want to take it for a spin. I agree with the content comments, esp Jazz & Classical on Qobuz - far deeper and richer.

OMG. A Scottish Dutchman with an American banker. You sure you didn't persuade Kobus to pay you to join?

None of Tinder matches like HiFi - is she single? ;)

What about Spotify, or doesn't that even compare album wise?
Specifically, hi-res - counting it out too?

lol. Married.

So far I do hear a difference between Tidal and Kobus.
I have no idea if it is the file / master provenance or something else.

I havenít done many AB comparisons.  So far Kobus seems to have a slightly lusher tone and a sense of ease.

I am seeing ECM titles
I donít see on Tidal.

I am having some glitches with HR on 20/20 fibre line.  Will try a temp
Upgrade to 50/50 to see if it helps once I clarify the pro rata calc with my ISP tomorrow.

Tidal does have ECM titles - they are not always easy to find, unless you do a specific album title or artist search. Not sure if it is the entire catalogue, or just more recent releases, though. Tend to agree with the general sentiments around Qobuz vs Tidal - the overall musical offering appears to be more European-biased and there is a general consensus among users that the quality is consistently better. Plus there is the added convenience of high-res downloads.

While on the subject of Tidal, I recently started using the My Mix feature.
https://tidal.com/us/mymix
It is a different way of utilising the similar song algorithm in that it takes your favourite tracks that are similar, puts it in a playlist and adds new (unknown) songs in-between your favourites.

Sadly from what I can see, Roon has no future plans to integrate Qobuz into their software. That immediately excludes it from consideration.
I see Tidal was sued today in Norway for fibbing. Seems to have been done by the previous owners to "assist" Jay-Z in his decision to buy over Tidal.

Qobuz now on Roon and apparently streams native 24/96 without needing Tidal's MQA. Just as I spent an arm and half a leg upgrading my dac to MQA.. Still ,let's hope Qobuz comes here.

Whatever. I'm way too old, too grumpy and too occupied to listen to anything but what my ears tell me.Right now they are telling me differently from your philosophical viewpoint-and hopefully your ears.

Via Roon mine and others working well streaming Kobus.

I like and dislike Roon.

Itís sonically good and library wise amazing but it gives one even less reason to communicate (about music) with others. I didnít think about that part until another geyser on this forum mentioned it.
