Interesting development.
So the new M21 DAC gives you the choice of either delta-sigma or ladder conversion for your PCM music.
(DSD gets its own pipeline.)

Unfortunately they haven't provided any more specific information regarding the chipsets or designs used.
My guess? ESS9038 for DS and Soekris boards (or Metrum's Transient OEM* chips) for the ladder part.

Obviously it's like a gazillion dollars (it's a Bricasti after all) but perhaps other manufacturers start trying similar things.
I think it's potentially really useful for a DAC to offer two slightly different sound signatures. For system matching and the like.

I know of one other example: AMR's DP-777 used a Wolfson DAC for 'high-res' and a Philips UDA1305AT for Red Book. 
I'm sure there are more examples.
