Are you prepared to do some spray-can DIY or do you want it all done and dusted for you?
Thickness of the mat?

I would like it all done. I have not done any research into the thickness of the mat.

Technics SL1200
Hmm. Not sure. My guts tell me slightly thicker (2.5mm) but I'd rather trust someone that knows the specific model really well - @Hi-Phibian ?

It's not a matter of paying a slightly different price between the thinner and thicker mats, but a difference in sound between them.
There is NO universal recipe - different platter weight/material/drive/... need different cork mat thickness.
You should really research this better and find out what the SL1200 owners recommend (but also be able to filter the DJ opinions out of the equation... )

Finally, I think that paint on cork is a really bad idea. It will change one of the most precious characteristic of cork (static free) to who knows what outcome. Painted surface, even if mat, will not adhere to vinyl as well as cork and cork adhesion is already marginal, hence best used with a record clamp. Also, cork is flexible - paints seldom are to the same extent.

Few issues with 1200.  Good energy dump is good.  So in most cases don’t go to thin.

Sl1200 also has a rim on the platter.  The original mat is “undercut” 5 mm odd from edge 1 mm deep.

So cork would be best with 2 layers.  One 10mm smaller dia at the bottom . If you cut the mat smaller to fit inside the rim it will not support the full LP.

On a 1200 my choice is original dense rubber or an Achromat.  Cork is ok on it but overall not better to my ears then the original.  So if you don’t have a mat or just a foam slip mat.  Cork is an affordable ok solution.
If you have the original I think you need to look beyond cork to get better.

I am currently using a felt mat. My 4 year old has also destroyed a second cartridge. She puts a stool and stands on the stool to reach the TT . I find it sometimes off the arm rest in the middle of the platter.  this eventually kills the needle.

And you think cork will be gentler to the needle than felt?

Somebody on the forum posted a youtube link yesterday. It was a video by  the editor of Stereophile magazine. He states in the video that felt is a needle killer. Cork is a better option in terms of mishaps.

I guess the real needle killer in this case is my daughter.

I doubt any mat would make a difference in those circumstances, a rubber mat works well on an SL1200 and you can always have the slipmat to enjoy DJ fantasies (which will probably cause more damage to the stylus unless it is a DJ one)

Try one of these instead...
