which is more important, pre or amp?

I know that they go hand in hand, but without a brilliant input you will not get great sound.
I have found that an amp can be mediocre but still give great sound if the Pre-Amp is really good.
I have also found that a great amp cam so ok if the pre is only ok.

There are also things like synergy in a system. what speakers are being driven and the list I guess goes on.

I had to use a Jeft DIY amp for a bit recently, it sounded absolutely fantastic for what it is. I found it to be very musical and perhaps that for me was why i enjoyed it. I t never had the dynamics, detail, separation, sondstage etc that a great amp has.

I then changed the Pre and it sounded like a musical misfit. everything was out of wack.

What are your findings?
