I'm looking for four of these, no luck anywhere locally.

Shot in the dark, but who knows?

Tough to find these.. but theres recommendations on another forum, apparently the MJ21194G (ON Semi) is a good replacement/upgrade for the 898. ( The 898 is also found in the AU999). RS, Farnell and Mouser readily stocking the MJ.

ISC Semi specialises in all the discontinued items is it not maybe on their list?

Try Little Diode in the UK as well.

Thanks guys, these are required for a Sansui AU-999. Seems the original transistors are no longer available but a MJ21194G is indeed a more than satisfactory replacement - with higher ratings - and is locally available so I will be ordering these from RS, who have stock. Mantech lists these as well, but "price on request".

Family_Dog / Gareth

Something may catch your eye when ordering these. They are of a "new" case/package type called the "TO-204". Your original case designation is "TO-3".  All references found thus far state that they are the same as the TO3 package, but still would like to know exactly what has changed. The datasheet states that the newer technology used in these transistors allow for a smaller case size...I can only assume/speculate at this point that the footprint is the same, but may be a slimmer (less thickness) package than the original TO3. (I had some 2N3442's (proper old TO3)  that look alot thicker than the TO-204).

Let us know what differences you find, but you should be fine wrt the footprint size/hole/pin spacing.

Interesting... I imagine the footprint will be the same but the casing might be thinner. Will soon find out and advise.

It occurred to me after I had ordered the MJs it really would have been a good idea to perhaps order new drivers as well, never thought of this earlier as the AU-999 is actually working, just has the totally incorrect output trannies fitted. Not a train smash, I will await their arrival and check then.
