A question about cartridges
« on: August 08, 2018, 01:14:40 PM »
I'm looking to either purchase a new stylus for my current cartridge, or buy a whole new cartridge/stylus combo.

My budget would only really afford the recommended Audio Technica AT95E, or a new stylus for my current cartridge.

Turntable in question is a Technics SL-23 with a stock integrated cartridge (271C-ES) image attached

I want advice on whether it's worth changing the cartridge, or keeping my old one. What will get me the best sound?

I don't know which will sound better, but would suggest that you buy the AT95e and try it. If you prefer the stock sound get a new stylus later when funds allow. One can never have too many cartridges. (and the AT is such a winner you'll always be able to sell it on)

Think you would need a headshell too.

That adds up.  Proper spec replacement from Jico Japan or Tonar would probably sound best and cost the same but the inconvenience of hard to get styli remains.   Generic nastier basic stylus would imo be beaten by the 95.

Yeah, I would need a headshell too. On the headshell front does it matter what you use? It doesn't seem like it would have much effect on the sound.

This is the current stylus replacement (at least at a price I can afford): https://www.amazon.com/Dreher-Kauf-Turntable-EPS-270ed-DK-DEPS270E/dp/B004JPKM4Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1533727620&sr=1-1&keywords=eps270ed

Headshell effect on sonics on medium and high mass arms is actually large.

One doesn’t know what you will get there.
Probably no better than the locally available generic.
You would have to look for Jico Japan or Tonar and choose at least elliptical to know what you are getting.

I think that's a good option for now. Can anyone recommend a reasonable headshell to pair it with>?
