Small woofer/mid
« on: July 03, 2018, 07:53:32 PM »
Hi all, I joined here to ask for advice on something else, but first....

I live and work away from home for 2 weeks at a stretch and I'm making do with an el cheapo temporary setup here...OK for background but not much else.

It follows the usual recipe of active sub and satellites. The satellites consist of two 1 inch cone drivers per side, leaving an irritating lack of midrange. I'm pretty sure i can make a big improvement by knocking together a couple of boxes and installing a small (really small) woofer/mid in each and a nice tweeter.

Can anyone comment/suggest/advise where to source such a woofer? Obviously I'm not talking high end kit here, just something to iprove the setup and give me something to do.

What about the Faital 3" Full range driver?

Pretty cheap and I have heard it sounds great, decent efficiency for a 3" at 91db as well.
You might not even need the tweeter, depending on your personal preference.

Thesoundguys are expecting stock around mid-July.

Yeah, this is the one I was referring to.
https://www.thesoundguy.co.za/Components/Woofers?product_id=192

As I said, they are expecting stock mid-July they said. I plan on picking up a pair for my car, see how they are.

They also have a 4" full range, although I have heard the 3" is a bit more magical.

I am currently working on a project with the Faital 3Fe..........nice driver   , more a mid than full range

It is tiny for sure

The Faital graph at 120 db  X axis is a bit flattering

the true in box response (80dB relative scale)

shows (uncompensated) baffle step , rather rising and  hot top end (for full range application) and very little under 200 Hz at the lower end.
Requires a flange or rear  mounted fit  to finish off

 -  glad this should be available,  locally soon , it cost me much more to bring in.........

Thanks for your trouble. I will be back in town in a couple of weeks and will pick up a pair. Is it worth adding a pair of tweeters, in your opinion?

fullrange:

if  u use this as a X-over   (note R2012 and 2013 not real , part of cap and inductor)

this is the result    -

example of proper 2 way with tweeter .............

WS17E

The Visaton WS17E is a 8ohm 6.5" woofer, not fullrange. Still an excellent deal, nevertheless.

I missed the fullrange requirement. I may get the Visatons and put them for sale here. Seems a shame for them to sit on a shop shelf.
