Classe CA 2100 vs Emotiva XPA-2 GEN3 POWER AMPLIFIER
« on: July 02, 2018, 08:11:13 AM »
I took the step to adding a power amp to drive my Monitor Audio GX 200's and tested both the Emotiva XPA 2 and Classe CA 2100 against each other. After about two weeks I settled on one.

High level specs:

Classe - 100Wats into 8 Ohm
Emotiva - 300Wats into 8 Ohm

Can anyone guess which one I settled on? It all depends on speakers I'm sure.

The Classe?  or did you prefer the extra power of the emotiva?

The one thing that really became relevant is that don't ever judge purely on the spec sheet.

Also interesting that the Classe weighs 21Kg's Where the Emotiva is 18kg's

Still not perfect But I think it might be a better bet to judge a amp by weight and not the spec sheet.

I would be interested to hear your views on experience with different amps. But the Emotiva purely based on spec scared me a bit at 300W. Considering my speakers are rated at 150W max.

And then the Classe was on the beginning edge of what I was looking for purely from a spec sheet perspective. Sometimes you have to see/hear for yourself before you can truly judge.

The Emotiva although powerful did not deliver quite as well as the classe which is also a second hand model compared to the brand new Emotiva. You would think that "Ooo my greatness, a 300W per channel (Both Driven) is an amazing stat. Till you put them next to each other and see and hear the Classe outperform at an 100W rating. I'm not saying that the Emotiva is a bad amp, may just that Classe truly understate their performance.

It is almost like comparing a cheap car with a powerful engine to an upmarket one with less power but greater quality. In my book that would be like comparing a Ford Ranger 3.2 with an Amarok 2 liter, but otherwise similarly specced.  :sh1tstirrer:
[BTW, I drive a Ranger myself, albeit the 2.2.]

As per the famous ad campaign from Pirelli.....power is nothing without control. There are many other factors (and specs) to consider other than just raw output. This includes inter alia slew rate and associated distortion figures.

I recall a review a few years back of a Classe amp where the tech designer talked about this, and the design goal of the amp to be wide bandwdith, low distortion and capable of driving low impedance loads at high sustained outputs - sans slew rate induced problems.

The thing that put me off Emotiva is - ironically - the price. In the beginning they cut out distributors and made really great components at their price. They negative would effectively be no warranty.

Now you can get them through the distributor with warranty - at 40% more. That Emotiva is $999 and R26k.

I also often read the issue on output numbers until I experienced it for myself.
I have heard my Dynaudios driven by 125w (NAD), 150w (Rotel) and 200w (Rotel) amplifiers until 3 months back, or so, when I decided to try them with the Quad 99 stereo power amp rated at 90w.  with the quad, my speakers sounded articulate, controlled and balsy.
not to mention, the quad is a third of the size of the other amps.

yes the other amps were heavier and could go a bit louder but for 'normal' listening levels, the quad was more than ample.

The Classe has a linear power supply, the Emotiva stuff has a lousy SMPS power supply ( i have never, ever, heard a power amp with a switch mode power supply sound better than cat litter smells)

Comparing, as i see it, is ridicoulus, the Classe is an amp with a real power supply, the Emotiva is nothing but bogus, there is not one power amplifier in the world yet produced with a SMPS supply that, with the same power rating of power supply, comes close to real life power output in a speaker load, SMPS are for stupid digital s**t.

Sorry but with all due respect ,how could you ever even compare the two? .Emotiva is cheap wanna be over rated American marketing (made in China ) crap ,compared to home crafted electronics made with know how and care in Canada.
A lesson for future would be buyers
Not even remotely on the same level and glad you listened with your ears and not your eyes like what seems to be the norm with Saffas  in general.
