Will think about this more but in the interim I feel obliged to add Adele - saw her live in the UK and the power and control is unbelievable. Exponentially better live than on CD.

She was also on my list, which I put together.

In hindsight....pop/rock. She must be on the list

Too many to properly decide, but these rate very highly for me.

Female:
Nina Simone
Beth Hart
Etta James

Male:
Teddy Pendergrass
Gregory Porter
Joe Cocker

Although I wanted to add Nat King Cole, but he doesn't fit the criteria of this topic.

Some local artists worthy of mention:

Johnny Clegg (for originality)
Jonathan Butler  (for musical talent)
Robbie Wessels  (particularly the song "Leeuloop" from the movie "Poena is Koning) *not a big fan of afrikaans pop but this is 1 of the coolest songs and most original vocals ever.
From the Dalai Lama:  Cables in allegory, are the "umbilical cord" or thread between life and afterlife. The quality of such life depends on the "source" of the energy, and not on the stitch or the thread...

I would never presume to rate one artist above another, but here are some of my faves*:

Shirley Bassey
Tanita Tikaram
Michael Bolton
Maurice White
Gino Vannelli
Tracy Chapman
Sade Adu
Jabu Khanyile
Judith Sepuma

*Maybe 40 years is not the right span, because it cuts the pop continuum at a crucial time.

I attended a Celine Dion concert in Las Vegas.  She has a stunning stage presence and fantastic talent.  She can belt out rock music and ballads with ease

i can't believe there's no love for karen carpenter here.
i don't feel comfortable to do a list of 'best' so will just go with favourite -  in no particular order;

woman singers;
annie herring
melissa mclelland
eilen jewell

& the 'i don't really want to leave them out the list ' are;
emmylou
andrea von kampen
tanya trotter. (actually probably the 'best' woman singer i have heard, but i just haven't bonded quite as much as the others)

men singers;
matthew ward
the blind boys of alabama (sorry. i just can't pick one of them out)
michael trotter

so one married couple, & one brother / sister combo.

for those not familiar with michael & tanya trotter (aka the war & treaty)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfkPgfzuVAc&list=RDEMRKPQKhYXsfTkZSWVbo27Zw&start_radio=1
