Anybody use 6v6 tube amps perhaps?

Just wondering how they compare with el84 for example?

This is a very good question.

The 6V6 is a beam tetrode whereas the EL84 is a pentode.

There are very good vintage 6V6 hifi and guitar amplifiers.

Easy to source NOS/used 6V6 valves.

Comparing:  The 6V6 is more efficient but the EL84 can be driven by a signal amplitude the half of that for a 6V6.

But availability-wise I doubt if any firm is still making 6V6s. 6V6 and 6L6 were the workhorses some 50+ years ago.

There is a re-issue of 6V6 valves as it is still used in some current and vintage guitar amplifiers

I ask because I have 40 nos Brimar from the 60's and a pair of Hashimoto 6.6k outputs....I know they sound wonderful with el84 but am sorely tempted to try them with 6v6 having never used 6v6 before...

Hi Kent

I have used the 6V6GT's with excellent results. I used the 6U8A pentode/triode as in my EL84 design. In a kit amp we built, with ultra linear transformers, the sound was excellent. The customer has been singing the praises of the amp ever since.

Funny you mention Brimar. I have British 6V6G (also 40 units  ;D). Are your's 6V6 metal tubes?

BTW Ampdog: JJ makes an excellent big envelope 6V6 and the Tung Sol (reissue) smaller 6V6GT; both sound excellent in guitar amplifiers.

Versions of 6V6 valves (there could be more):

6V6 (metal)
6V6G (coke bottle shape) - the more sought after type
6V6JAN
6V6GT (ordinary type)
6V6GTA
6V6GTY

I also have a lot of these 6V6 valves

Then there is the 7 pin version of the 6V6, the 6AQ5

Today 6V6 valves are mostly used in guitar amplifiers

Funny enough I am building a 6V6, 6K6 loaded amp. Running them triode-strapped in parallel. so effectively a 13k2 load - 6k6 being a bit below the `8k pentode and `10k triode optimum loads. this will be very low power (horns will be happy) but should keep them in class A. Since you have so many of the buggers why not do the same? Or sell me the Hashimotos - i have only Hammonds  :sd:

Very interesting topic.

Long time since I heard of a 6K6 (pentode) output valve.

Another interesting one is the 6Y6 valve that was used in single ended amplifiers.

Spekeing of 6Y6, I have a few I have to test.  I also have a few 6F6G's that I have never got to sound as good as the 6V6GT. Has anyone got experience with 6F6G's?

6F6:  Yaaaah .... mmmmm. Pentode, 10W anode dissipation, 0,7A heater.  Pentode valve of olden days.

6K6GT:  Heater current only 0,4A, Pa = 8,5W only. Pentode, mostly used in old car radios.

Both valves inefficient compared to 6V6GT which is a beam valve, which started dominating the scene soon after its introduction way back. 6V6 can be moderately abused when well ventilated. I made a few 12W amplifiers in the day, popular then, can best be used in U.L. with 25% screen taps.

(Not trying to show off knowledge, simply often encountered in the days. 'REX' 'potted' Jap OPTs with 25% screen taps plentiful then. I still have a model here somewhere. Popular valve complement: 2 x 6V6GTs,  6SL7, 6SJ7 and occasionally another 6SL7 as pre-amp/tone control etc. 6X5 rectifiier, later Si diodes. A number built by us students - ER! when we were taking off from studying, that is ....   ;D)

P.S.: OOPS! Sorry; did not notice I replied already  - usual reason ...

I plugged them into my 48 watt Class A 6L6 push-pull amp. The sound is excellent, and the power transformer runs cooler. I think they are going to stay in this amp! (Excuse the dusty exterior)

Well, someone is going to using this 6V6G push-pull amplifier. Hopefully they would be happy

Mars ST48 by Karel Mars, on Flickr

I designed it for 6L6G/C running in class A, but the power transformer got a bit hot. The 6V6G's economic filament demands made the difference. The amp should be called the ST30 though.
