Laurel on the PC speakers, I'm sure the Mrs will pick up on this in a few days and I can hear it on her phone repeatedly for the next week.

i have to wonder what would be audible if we were not predisposed to hear yanni or laurel?
perhaps one of the other words some have reported hearing (though i am not sure if they are serious or not)

in any case:

call that a yanni? that's not a yanni. now this is a yanni:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VMjiU61QiY

Now it seems that what you hear depends on the pitch at which it is delivered by the source (Drifter's experience, for example).
Would be interesting to see, if 2 or more, listening to the same source, will perceive it differently..?

I think that if the pitch had been changed by only 1% or 2%, that would have had validity. But significant pitch change is unlikely with digital playback. You'd have to go out of your way (as he did).

Three people listening on the same phone, same volume yesterday - 2 Yanni, 1 Laurel.  1 Yanni, 1 Laurel are about the same age, both Yanni were female, Laurel male.

What you hear depends on you hearing (DUH)!  :BWAHAHAH:

Change the pitch and you hear differently:

down 30%: https://t.co/F5WCUZQJlq
down 20%: https://t.co/CLhY5tvnC1
up 20%: https://t.co/zAc7HomuCS
up 30% https://t.co/JdNUILOvFW
up 40% https://t.co/8VTkjXo3L1 & https://t.co/suSw6AmLtn

That's it! I hear Yanny on the untouched version, and I tried by maxing treble  and minimising Bass and vise versa on my Beomaster, and I still heard Yanny. But with those clips the first two with the pitch down are undoubtedly Yanny, the ones with the pitch up unambiguously Laurel.

I wonder if there are any that change it between 1-10%? I'd like to see what my ambiguity threshold is

Wow. Does this mean that small differences in construction of an individual's whole 'hearing channel' filters frequencies in such a way that a compound sound can be interpreted differently by those individual's brains..?

Or to put it in plain language, everyone's ears are different depending upon what has happened to them since birth (and differences in physiology I expect).  It's a bit like an optical illusion, seen from a different angle you may trick the eyes.  In this case, heard through different frequency filters (age, deterioration, source) this is an aural illusion.  The original word was Laurel.

Can everybody just say what they hear, so I know not to take anything to do with Hifi or sound seriously from anyone who hears anything other than Yanni.

Ever again
