USB DAC for Raspbery Pi as NAS
« on: April 30, 2018, 08:31:58 AM »
This post is a bit of a mix, but I guess this is the better place to start the thread.

I have set up a Raspberry Pi 3 as a NAS server and needs to find a USB based DAC or alternatively a GPIO DAC card for the Raspberry.

My aim is to play FLAC media files on a reasonably good setup, so I am not interested in the bottom line DACs available.

I am hoping someone has gone down this road before and can recommend which option is the preferred one. It would be great to hear your reasoning as well!

PiShop has a wide variety and probably also the best that you can find locally.

There is a write-up on this forum on the Allo Boss DAC.

Personally I would go with a GPIO DAC over a USB DAC.

Thanks for the reply @dekardy. Any reason you would prefer the GPIO route?

Interesting content on the AVF link you provided. Will read through it carefully.

There are quite a number of GPIO DAC boards outh there with HiFiBerry being a very good option.

Yup.  Ethernet and USB shares the same bus on a raspberry pi so you will have contention especially on high quality streams.  Using a GPIO DAC helps remove this.

Not sure how your setup works. Still waiting for PI 3B+ to get certified in SA but my setup will work like this:

NAS server in my office with lan cable to HT area where it plugs into the pi running osmc and kodi. From pi hdmi cable to TV and hdmi cable from TV to amp

Done and dusted.

Quite true and a reality that has caught me out before ...

Not sure how your setup works.

OMV on the Pi for NAS and MPD on the Pi for the music server controlled from my Android phone. Used to have a FreeBSD box as a NAS (no not FreeNAS) but alas a lightning strike took a not so kind liking to the setup. So I thought let's see how small I can go and still achieve quality. So far so good. Just need to sort the audio stream quality out.

Spent a bit reading today and ordered a IQaudIO Pi-DAC PRO from PiShop. Will post my experience when I receive the HAT board.

Thanks for all the advice!  :2thumbs:

Got the board this morning. PiShop can get 5 stars for service!

Now I need to spend some time to get Debian stretch configured for this. Fun times.

I have always been very happy with their service.  Kudos to them.

Should be easy.  Just add "dtoverlay=iqaudio-dacplus" to /boot/config.txt and select iqaudio soundcard in alsa.

Some more reading if you wish,

Thanks a million for the linkys. Will change boot config. I already have wifi, bluetooth and HDMI disabled in there, so this should get things sorted.   :dop:

Wow, I am blown away! The DAC card is amazing!

I battled a bit to get upmpdcli updated as I made a stupid typing mistake when setting the repository sources list file for MPD. For those of you who want to run the upmpdcli frontend for MPD , use the https://www.lesbonscomptes.com/upmpdcli/downloads.html guide. Take note of the small paragraph right at the bottom of the page to set the repository for MPD for Raspbian.

All else went smoothly and alsa found the card once /boot/confix.txt was configured and tuned and I bounced the Pi.

Using MPDroid on my phone allows me to do most anything with MPD. Just need to figure out how to stream radio channels now...

All in, the money spent on this RaspberryPI HAT DAC card was worth every cent. Thanks again @dekardy for your kind help!  :dop:

@nubble, did you fit the RPi and the HAT into a case? I am making a wood and copper (steampunk style) one ATM as the cases I could buy are poor quality and looks. Maybe you have found something decent you wish to share.
