My first 2 way speaker build
« on: November 29, 2018, 11:15:45 AM »
I completed my first DIY 2 way project last night. A great sense of achievement for me.  :Whoohoo: I thought I would share the build process with some pictures below.
I am not using crossovers but rather minidsp active crossover with own amplification for each driver. The Linkwitz route I guess...

And thank you to this community of members who are always willing to give valuable advice and recommendations.

With Brians recommendation, done the audio designs in bassbox pro first:

Physical designs first done in sketchup for fitting and panel sizing:

First fit of drivers after cutting/routing and then gluing panels together:

I couldnt find any plastic pipe that matched the diameter of the port needed, so I improvised a little with a rolo tube hardened with wood glue. I decided to use speakon connectors as these are not that common and will hopefully prevent someone from just connecting full range signals into the speaker instead of the drivers specific signal ranges:

Next came fine layer of primer to help with the MDF soaking:

Then I thought that gloss enamel black paint would work applied with a foam roller. I didnt like it. It was gloopy and looked terrible to me. It just didnt have a smooth finish I was hoping for. so I sanded back down to the primer and bought some Rustoleum chalk paint spray instead. Charcoal was the best color I could match.Picture of the gloopy enamel paint first coat.

No one likes getting cold:

And this is the finished assembled speakers getting ready for its first test drive. I will place it on the fireplace shelf where the depth was designed to match.

The drivers used were a pair of Audax tweeters I had cannibalized from a pair of Soundcraft Spirit Absolute 2 monitors [hence still the name on the tweeter]. The midrange drivers are Faital Pro 5FE100 I got from the soundguy. The Crossover currently is setup at 2Khz symmetrical, but will fine tune that a bit later when doing mic measurements and dsp.

Overall, I am really pleased with the outcome. The build process took me a long time [30 minute chunks here and there].

It sounds really pleasing currently without any proper measurements and DSP applied. I would say nearly comparable to the B&W 603 S3s sitting next to them.  :BANDW: I have them configured with a B&W ASW650 to complete the bottom end.

Happy Days!!

Thanks. Im really pleased with how smooth the Rustoleum finish is. I considered applying lacquer but it looks well finished without it, and so I left it.

Next up is a pair of Wilson Watt Puppy Replicas. Driver secured from Mervin, and physical designs done with wood ordered and cut already.
Will also run these with active DSP crossovers.

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
