All good HiFi should have transformers... 
Benefits: Motor torque improvement due to DC filtering, plus perhaps some AC stabilisation. Torque improvement is not small at all.
Additional benefit is slightly reduced voltage due to nominal transformer loses, which means that motor runs with reduced vibration.
