Been to the ENT - not even a speck of wax , tympanic membranes ok , no hearing losses at all BUT the eustachain tubes are not equalising to outside pressure at times - kinda like when you got a bad head cold - the cause (after shoving a camera up my nose) is gastric reflux or heartburn , evidently the acid is irritating both my voicebox and where the openings in the throat are that drain or allow eq of the tubes are. The cure is simple , a course of nexium which stops the reflux ands sleep with the head elevated so that at night there is no acid creeping up.
Was quite interesting , she said normal ppl wouldn't even bother about this , but evidently , I have trained myself to have abnormally sensitive hearing in terms of hifi , in that listening for various detials has stimulated the nerve paths into being sensitive to such detail - so it sappears you CAN learn to have so called "golden ears". In the same context , she said that often ppl come in with compromised hearing and dont want to use a hearing aid , they wait a while , like 6 months to year and then decide to get a hearing aid and it's innefective as without the stimulation , the nerve paths degrade and cant regenerate.
Had a whole discussion bout ear cleaning - ear candling is stupid and useless , syringing is fine if done by an ENT but homee syringing can cost an eardrum - they have a suction thingy they use after softening the wax - best is to use an earbud to remove wax in the cartilage section of the ear and not to dig deep. Also discussed tinnitus - which is common ut not always constant and there is no definitive cause for such , I mentioned excess caffiene and she said that was nonsense , she said that if you put 20 ppl in an anechoic chamber , after an hour , 90% of em will develop tinnitus. 15 secs of 150+ db sound will cause permanent ear damage - use of ipods at high volume with earbud type or normal headphones  seems to be the cause of why she is seeing a lot more young folk come in with hearing damage. Spent  over an hour ith her - the cost - R800, seems mike M is right , specialist charge R800 a visit.....
