What’s the safest alcohol to drink at parties?

Ever wondered what the safest alcohol to drink in bars and at parties is?

You’d think that because alcohol disinfects, your vodka Red Bulls are safe for consumption - well, think again.

The researchers tested the resilience of bacteria by putting infected ice in common drinks.  The results are as follows:

Vodka: Killed none

Coca-Cola: Killed Bacillus and Pseudomonas

Tonic: Killed all barring Acinetobacter

A recent study published in the medical journal Springer took a look at the different types of bacteria that survives in ice.

Bar ice is not just solid water, but plays host to 31 species of bacteria, including Pseudomona (skin and lung infection), Staphylococcus (staph infections), Bacillus (food poisoning) and Acinetobacter (pneumonia and meningitis.)  Suddenly our only problem when going out isn’t the looming hangover of the next day, but bacterial ice!

Luckily there is hope, let the wooden casks roll in.  Ain’t no party like a whiskey party!

Whiskey: Annihilated them ALL and is the safest alcohol to drink.

Besides the fact that whiskey is healthier in terms of calorie content, a new study reveals whiskey to be a killer of bacteria found in bar and party ice.
For more details on the study, “Presence of pathogenic bacteria in ice cubes and evaluation of their survival in different systems,” you know, in case you want to be further put off drinking.

Granted, in the vast majority of cases, drinking the bacteria won’t make you sick. Let’s face it, you’ve been consuming these micro bad-terials your entire drinking life.

Luckily there is hope, all thanks to that luscious mashed grain aged in wooden casks, whiskey.

Cheers to whiskey, the safest alcohol that kills all bacteria!

Yes, good point. Better to avoid the ice.

Note the "Tonic: Killed all barring Acinetobacter". Tonic water, quinine, old days colonial anti-malarial. It came up here a while ago, that tonic water was generally not made with quinine anymore.

I have been telling people of all sorts of ailments for many years now to take whiskey for whatever it is they suffer from. Does it always work? No, but that doesn't matter, hey?
Provided it is good whiskey.

Safest thing to drink at a party - beer, from a bottle, keep the bottle with you at all times (well, at the type of party mixmag go to)

edit " safest thing to drink at a party ANY public place, including a restaurant - beer anything, from a bottle (orclosed container) , keep the bottle with you at all times"

Especially if you have no reliable wingman/woman.

So wine, cans, bottles etc (all opened at the table/before you), alchoholic or not - all good.  Even my daughter of 14 even knows not to accept ANY open beverage from ANY person in a social setting, albeit for a WHOLE different reason.

Yip.  Make sure kids know this from early on.

In November a load of us went up to the Berg for a friend's birthday bash.  At the Spar in Underberg there were signs advising people not to accept drinks from strangers at the ATM outside Tops as there had been incidents of spiked drinks followed by muggings.  It surprises me that anyone would accept a drink from a stranger if they were using the ATM, but must have been an issue or there would not have been the signs.

I have some fond, and some not so fond memories of "Mandy's" in Jozi back in the 80's.

R10 entrance fee included free beers for us & spirit coolers for the girls - used to be Esprit wine cooler I think. I shudder involuntarily at the mention of it now. Blegh.

Except they rinsed the glasses out in what we were sure was surgical spirits or moonshine - 2 beers & we were blotto. We'd then move on to Chelsea or Bella or The Dome etc.

Cheapest & quickest way to get a proper buzz on as a dumb & poor student :).
