LF: LEGAL ASSISTANCE IN MOZAMBIQUE
« on: January 08, 2018, 02:12:23 PM »
So yesterday I drove to Mozambique to fetch my stepson and his siblings.
His father had hit a padestrian while heading for the Border to SA.
He was arrested and placed in a holding cell and we were informed this was till Monday when a Bail hearing would be had.
That has not happened today and he was moved from the holding cell to a Mozambique prison.

Now his wife slept in the Police Station anticipating the Bail hearing and then they were to head home.
She has no one with her and is now standing outside the prison they took her husband to. She is in a hell of a state as you can imagine.

Do any of you on the Forum have contacts in Mozambique that could assist?
This is going South in a big way.
Please pass on to anyone you think can assist.

Is he being held at Maputo?
We've contacted a friend who lives there. She'll let us know Re: lawyer!
Post if there is any change please.

Maybe try a thread on http://www.4x4community.co.za ? I'm sure you'll find more members who are active in Mozambique.

Thanks Guys. Looks like the new lawyer is making progress. My mate is now in a single occupant cell under police protection.
There is an investigation being launched into the bribe taking by the prison guards. He has been seen by the Chief Justice and Police Commissioner.
Now just to get a Judge to actually pitch to set bail.

What a pain in the bum, waste of time and money.
Even duct tape can’t fix stupid… but it can muffle the sound

He arrived home late yesterday and was released without bail.
Seems the threat of an investigation into corruption had a way of speeding things along.
He is not well though and it will take a long time to recover from this ordeal.

Thanks for reading and the advice given.

I work here but I would avoid it as a tourist.
Before moving on, is Mozambique to be avoided as a holiday destination?

Inefficiencies and soliciting brown envelopes is one thing but violence and unlawful detention (compared to western standards) is quite another. If the latter is the case, my feeling would be to avoid like the plaque especially when traveling with the family.

Just to be clear, inefficiencies and soliciting brown envelopes also a definite "no no" but at least one can walk away from that.
