Aqua La Voce DAC
« on: December 23, 2017, 12:38:08 PM »
I ordered an Aqua La Voce DAC from Air (Stefan). It arrived as he said it would; this past Thursday.

Before setting it up I was wondering if it would really make a difference. Well, as soon as the first song started to play; the impact it made was absolutely huge. Voices and instruments sound real/natural. My brother is on holiday with his family so I asked him to come and listen: He was glob smacked; said it was like 3D sound( huge sound stage almost wrapping around) He jokingly  said that I could charged people for the experience. The truth is that it is really that good.

The sound is absolutely beautiful; the best description I can offer. Balanced and clear, with wonderful definition. The bass is rich, mids very good and highs are ever so sweet. It is an amazing DAC. If you are looking for a DAC , look no further, this one is excellent.

A huge thank you to Stefan( Air). His advice is solid. He is an absolutely honest person. And his prices are very fair indeed.

Which implementation, do you know?

There's 3 or 4 possible dac chip variations I think?

Does your one resolve DSD?

@JBredene I have the standard Burr brown. There are three options
@Chrisc It does not play DSD- a problem for some people I guess. I only have six Super Audio dsd disc's so I don't mind that it does not read dsd. I suppose reading dsd and pcm complicates the design and would make it far more expensive. But I must say that it would have been nice if it did. But what it does read it does so supremely. It can read Hi res files, XRcd and, of course cd. If you don't have many dsd material and have a listen to it you will immediately be convinced that it is a very special DAC

Well, I solved my problem with my SACD disc's not been able to be played on the Aqua. I ripped them. They are Hybrids so ripping them extracts the PCM only. Believe me, they sound absolutely fantastic. Gentlemen, you really have to listen to an Aqua to believe just how good it sounds.

The Burr Brown PCM1704K/UK R2R DAC chip is a jaw dropping listen - Wadia claimed this was the best chip in existence, Audio-gd use the PCM1704UK R2R DAC chip in the Master 7 Singularity DAC with Amenero input card (32/384) - equipped with a whopping 4 x PCM1704UK R2R chips per channel.

Congrats on the Aqua purchase

1704 was pretty much the only DAC chip used in serious DAC's for quite a while until FPGA-based R2R alternatives became available. Excellent chip but expensive as it is mono, single-ended current output and no integrated digital filter. This means an external filter, current-voltage conversion and at least 4x chips for a stereo differential output, which quickly got expensive.

@pwatts- thanks for the info. I did read that it was expensive and, for that very reason many manufacturers stop using it, not because they had more superior chips available

I am happy to tell you that the Aqua La Voce' S2 can be up graded to the S3; the S3 being the new version. The S3 can play DSD, so I am sure this will be of interest. Chrisc, you need one of these :)

I had the Aqua logo tattoed on my shoulder.
That's how much I love mine.
Okay not really.
I mean, I do love it,
but I didn't get inked.
The La Voce is a great DAC.
Heads-up, though.
If you ever put one up for sale you get a visitor from the home country,
to come and 'convince' you that you don't really want to sell it after all.
I kid again, of course.
Or do I?
Maybe.
Stan did you get the S3 upgrade?
