Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Headphones
« on: December 21, 2017, 12:45:14 AM »

The HD 58X launches Friday, December 22 at 6 a.m. PT for $149.99
Quantities will be limited to 5,000 units.

Looks fantastic IMO - gotta wonder about the HD6XX at just $50 more though.
Going to look for any reviews or tester comments now, but I wonder how the new 150 ohm driver differs from the one in the HD660?
The HD58X is, after all, $350 cheaper.

Fantastic value at $150 though, assuming it's not a total dog, which knowing Sennheiser it won't be.

Thanks Arie! Must say this one is cheap enough and sufficiently different to the normal 600/650 to pique my interest.

Interesting comment on the SBAF discussion ...

Q: What is with the recent hard-on for making headphones that are "easier to drive".

A: Audiophile market tapped out so need to sell to normal people. Normal people don't use headphone amplifiers. People at work see me listening to LCD2Cs and then go "what's that?" when they see the headamp. Heck, dedicated headamps didn't exist 15 years ago.

I like this response from Reddit the most:

These headphones are perfect for someone who heard an HD650 and thought "I like it, but there's just too much bass here"

Those five people are gonna be psyched, though

582 units sold at time of writing - 4418 left...

Not the sales that Massdrop would have preferred I'm sure.
The problem is that this particular model just doesn't seem to have a place in the line-up.
What is the market for this one? I just don't know.

$50 more gets you a HD6XX and no 6 month wait.
The same $199 gets you a AKG K7XX or many other under $200 headphones off Amazon etc.

I think most of the 582 have bought this out of curiosity, because it's cheap and to get a low serial number!

Colour me intrigued. Judging by Jude's Headfi review however, the sound signature seems awfully close to the DT990 - emphasising sub bass and highs.

None of this is a bad thing but I own the 990's already... And my 6XX's are en route.

Hell of a deal though.
