NAD has an issue with the incandescent lamps used as LCD backlights in many of their products. These simply don't last. On the tuners like the 402 and 412, I have replaced the tubular lamp with two white LEDs (with a suitable series resistor, of course). By using some fine sandpaper to make the LEDs opaque to aid light diffusion, and using two LEDs in place of the single lamp, it works rather well.

On some of their CD players it is more challenging - someone brought me a NAD 5420. To get to the lamp, one has to remove the main PCB. On this machine they used a thick red diffuser between the LCD and the lamp - even with a bright white LED, the display is not really clear enough.

Any other ideas for upgrading the LCD backlighting with something that lasts? Other suggestions?
