Which budget games comsole?
« on: December 07, 2017, 11:23:31 AM »
I have an old SONY CRT TV in the garage and was thinking it would be cool to hook up a cheap games console for the kids to play with over the holidays.

What a decent cheapie console do you guys suggest?
I don't want to spend much more than R500 or so.

The TV has S-Video and composite inputs.

Then there is the Raspberry Pi option.  If I can get decent controllers, this may be a better solution.

About a year ago they had a Sega and a Nintendo 'pre-loaded' nostalgia package available in many places.  About R900 if I recall.  The Sega one had most of the big titles.  Checkers also had cheap Chinese arcade game machines with the likes of Pacman, Space Invaders, Galaxians etc. for a couple of hundred.

Raspberry Pi running an emulator distro should be in your budget.

An old Wii could be the answer.
Thanks for the tip.

PS2

It is still the best selling console of all time even after Sony stopped manufacturing it in 2013.

Recapping of vintage equipment isn't restoration. By definition, restoration means returning to it's original condition. New capacitors isn't vintage.

^^ agree. Consoles cost around R500-R800 at cash converters and games are now dirt cheap.

Agree^^. Should be able to find lotsa games around online or through cash crusaders. Xbox360s and PS3 are easy to find, but being an old CRT TV I would say its a bit pointless.

Otherwise try and find an old Sega Megadrive or NES, though cartridges will be harder to find.

Emulators are also nice, however tryna hook up a PC to that old TV means you'll have to find a video card with S-video or composite connections. Doubt you get HDMI or DVI to S-video?
