POLL: A South African designed and built Headamp!
« on: November 22, 2017, 05:28:09 PM »
And so it started:

Mr Mars,
build a headphone amp for us please.
  :groovy: :groovy: :groovy:

Here's the thread: https://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,67804.0.html

Thanks Craig - it's all on you buddy - you've gotten me thinking, and that doesn't always end well...

I think this is a brilliant idea, and I think even more brilliant to do it based on input from fellow Forumers.

What would YOU like to see in a locally conceived, designed and built TUBE headphone amplifier?

What would you be prepared to pay for such a beast? (This is obviously the crux). It should be accessible to all is my view.
Of course I am speaking from almost total ignorance here since I do not know the cost of quality parts.
But there is plenty evidence that it can be done on a tight budget and still achieve excellent sound and build quality if done right.

How should it look? OT or OTL? Hybrid? (Nah!)
Which tubes should be used? Should it accommodate low and high impedance headphones?
Pre-amp function?
How many inputs? What type of inputs?

Mr. Mars has indicated that he MIGHT be willing to take on such a challenge.
I say let's strike while the tube is hot (!) and before Mr. Mars has a chance to change his mind or find something else to do.
Let's give him something to sink his teeth into over the festive season.

I have no idea if this has been done before, and there may well be good reasons for that.
I think it's eminently do-able however.

SO...how about it folks? I like the sound of "The AVF-One Headphone Amplifier"  :2thumbs:

I'm in for sure.
LOCAL all the way
criteria for me may sound funny, but it has to look the part. and have cool looking bottles.
although it can be re-housed if i feel the need.
other than that i am open to anything.

you mentioned before the Bottlehead Crack. I think that is a good basis, affordable, and some of them look good, they are all reported to sound superb.
it must be able to roll tubes.

Agreed! Why bother unless it looks killer.

You should not have to feel the need 'cos it's gonna look KILLER!

Agreed again, however it must not be a Crack clone - I think we can do it even better.

it must be able to roll tubes.
But of course!!

I like everybody else's ideas. My only addition: backlit analogue VU meters.

I LIKE it!! Gotta keep cost in mind though - maybe rather spend the ZAR on something that actually improves the gear.

That said, there's something about those VU meters...perhaps worth the spend considering how much FUN they are!

I think as first models that rather develop the sound than the fancies
but with options in mind.

I am with you guys. Can it be Class A, please? Supporting both low and high impedance phones would be high on my list of must haves, same as class A and, of course, tubes.

Indeed. Was kidding about the VU meters (just love the things).

More to the point, I think balanced would be nice for certain peeps. Also, variable gain and RCA outs (fixed would be fine for now) to push tube sound to speakers.

You do that!

Here's some eye candy to inspire you. No particular rhyme or reason to these - just surfing around the net to see what's out there.
And there's a LOT!

Even some VU meters and something from Monoprice just for Mr. Tenflare...

Imo a headphone amplifier, especially a valve one, that accommodates high Z and Low Z is compromised.

OTL ideally. Otherwise SET but accommodating a 300B or 2A3.

Balanced in and out (no pseudo balanced or phase splitting).

Preouts or at least analog passthrough.

Autobiasing.

Maybe a hybrid (can be run SS or tube, like a Schiit Mjolnir).
