« on: October 11, 2017, 05:57:42 PM »
Hi Guys. Where does one buy new tape for R2R machines? I'm looking for both quarter and half inch tape.

A box with 6 X Ampex 456 and 1 X Ampex 406. These are apparently blank, never recorded NOS.
I say apparently because I don't know, that will need to be verified by someone who knows more about these things.

On closer inspection the plastic is still sealed so definitely never used. The 406 and 2 of the 456 are1/4".
4 of the 456 are 1/2".

Be wary of Ampex. It goes sticky, regardless of being used, unused, sealed in plastic.
Not universally, but it is a BIG problem with certain brands and series.

Search "Ampex Sticky Shed Syndrome" for thousands of article on the chemistry.

^ Yep. Unfortunate but true.
Affects Ampex and derivatives/re-brands.

Sticky shed will only gum up your machine once. It is nasty  experience and fixing the machine really unpleasant. Ampex 456 and 406 are really prime offenders.

Baking the tape is only really if there is some precious content on the tape that needs to be transferred. It is not a permanent solution.

Currently only 2 producers of tape : Pyral in France( who seems to be insolvent themselves  and ATR in the US. Prices are about US$25  for 7 inch reel and $50 for 10 inch. You'll still need flanges for the 10 inch reel

Tapetape.com is very good. Their One Pass tape prices are unbeatable. I have used them before with no trouble although as usual our postal service precludes post.

One pass tape means it has been recorded on once then bulk erased and anyone with experience using tape is that if you are going to get dropout it will be on the first record.
