AR XA re-plinth & arm mod
« on: October 09, 2017, 09:08:34 AM »
Thought I'd share my later project for those interested in seeing. I purchased this AR XA some time ago, it wasn't in the greatest condition and the arm was missing parts so I decided to construct a new plinth from a piece of Kiaat I had laying around and also replace the tonearm with a Rega arm. It's taken some time to get to where I am now, I only really get time to work on projects over weekends. It's pretty much complete, all that's left is to fine tune the suspension and align the cartridge.

Anyway, here are some pictures.

What it looked like when I got it:

Test fitting:

Top plate cut to accommodate new arm and repainted:

After lots of sanding the first finish went on, I wanted the wood grain to pop so I decided to try my own concoction of Danish oil firs and finish that with a few coats of Shellac and paste wax.
This was after 3 coats of Danish oil:

A few outside shots to try and show the lovely grain and figure:

Some more shots I took last night after fitting the cartridge and putting all the electronics back:

.  What mounting distance (222 mm or 219,5 mm :sh1tstirrer: ) and what alignment did you use? The cart seem to be protruding much the same as my Dynavector DV 10x5 (also Rega arm), and I used 222

Looked again....it was just the pic.   Mine is still "awkward" though

In a maximum bank turn in a normal category airplane, like a typical Cessna, everything is fine until you turn across your own wake

222mm I think  I haven't done any setting up or cart alignment yet, just mounted the cart on the arm so that's why it's so far forward.
Ps. Let me know if you ever want to get rid of that DV 10x5.  :rubhands:

Great job - that plinth looks amazing!
I love music - analog and digital. Even listening to the Blues makes me happy. During the day I coach and counsel, after hours I indulge in my second passion - listening to vinyl and restoring turntables. Some I keep, some I sell...
