I suppose I could just have Googled  :-[

https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/philips/el3542.shtml

Tape Recorder dating from 1960.

Is this thing worth something to someone or should I dump it?

And it works! Watched a few YouTube vids and got it going.

Can I sell this to
a) Settle my bond
b) Buy a new car
c) Buy a coke and packet of chips

Certainly a nice exhibit for playing music at your cocktail parties, etc.
Not really high fidelity in the modern sense, but better by far than a Crosley record player!
Certainy not something to dump, it's in superb condition cosmetically.

In S.A, they typically sell for about R300-R500 or so, not Revox or Otari prices.

A key point in determining its value is the degree of wear on the record/playback head. High wear = very low value because new heads cost thousands.

The tape on the right side of the headblock looks twisted; needs to be sorted out or the tape itself can be damaged during fast wind.

Thanks gents. Certainly a nice conversation piece / party trick!

Correct. Not sure how to sort this out though, will play with it over the weekend and see.

Thanks for the comments!

This model (like a few others of the time) is mono, but with a stereo playback option.
You could buy a separate speaker-with-amplifier combination to convert it to true stereo playback.

You could also plug it into an external  stereo amp.

Offer it to the cops. May be able to use it for recordings in their interrogation rooms. Nazis may also be interested.
