My well-loved HP Officejet Pro 8600 recently reported "There is a problem with the printer or ink system". Message, followed by an error message on my computer "Missing or failed printhead. "The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, incorrectly installed or incompatible."

I managed to buy an old printer for the symbolic sum of R150. This one works, but prints with missing stripes (in test page print mode). I attempted an unclogging, but now this printhead throws up the same error.

Researching this problem, there are indications that the problem is related to something HP is doing in its software. Apparently, HP would replace the printheads while under warranty. This printer is now discontinued, so also out of warranty period. A new printhead (CM751-80013A) seems to cost around 70% of a new printer. Any advice on how to proceed with this?
