My brother just got a Pro-ject Elemental. Nice little deck, but a serious negative is a very bad hum while playing. We think it's probably mechanical hum, not electrical, because it only starts once the needle hits the record, and stops if you stop the motor with the arm still down (yes I know you shouldn't do that). Looking at the TT, the motor is bolted directly onto the plinth with little isolation. Even a gentle tap on the plinth makes a noise, so it seems to me that the motor noise is propagating through the plinth and bearing to the platter and hence the cartridge. He is taking it back to the dealer - I can't believe that amount of noise is normal. But I was wondering if anyone has some experience with these TTs and can comment?
